Advize (Company)
Advize is an educational technology company that provides a career learning and recommendation platform aimed at helping students discover career paths through short-form video content featuring professionals sharing their career journeys.[1] The platform was developed to address challenges students face when exploring career options.
Background Advize was founded by Emily McSherry, who was an MBA student at the UCLA Anderson School of Management.[2] McSherry created the platform after experiencing difficulties navigating career options post-college. Coming from a small town in Texas, she wanted to pursue business but lacked the necessary professional network.[3]
The company was established to address inequities in career development resources. According to a UC Davis Innovation Institute publication, many students rely primarily on personal networks or limited career center resources to explore professional pathways.[3]
Product and technology Advize's platform features a library of short-form video content consisting of informational interviews with professionals across various industries and roles.[4] The videos are segmented by question, allowing students to access specific information efficiently.[5] The Tools Competition, which recognized Advize as a finalist, described the platform as one that "helps students gain confidence and learn about careers effectively via short-form informational interview video content with alumni professionals and AI-recommended content playlists."[5]
Recognition and achievements In May 2023, Advize won the $10,000 Education + Education Tools Sector Award at the 23rd annual UC Davis Big Bang! Business Competition, a business competition organized by the Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.[6] In 2024, Advize was selected as a finalist in the Growth Prize Level ($150,000) category of the 2025 Tools Competition in the Enhancing Post-Secondary Learning track. The Tools Competition recognizes tools that improve post-secondary learning outcomes and experiences, particularly for underserved learners.[5]
Business model and growth As of 2023, according to reporting from the UC Davis Innovation Institute, Advize planned to launch with five college career centers by fall 2023. The company aimed to reach 13,000 videos and 25,000 student users by the end of the 2023-2024 school year, with projections to grow to 39,000 videos and 360,000 users by 2026, and more than 1.5 million users by 2028.[3] The platform is positioned as a solution to address early talent turnover in professional environments, which the UC Davis article reports costs employers between $60,000 and $200,000 per replacement hire.[3]
