First of all,the Berlin Conference was organised to get peaceful ways of dividing Africa without any conflicts and wars. After the Berlin Conference,Germany and Britain rushed or scrambled to get colonies/territories in East Africa whereby Britain colonised Uganda and Kenya and then Germany colonised Tanganyika which is the present day Tanzania. This meeting was chaired by Sir.Otto Von Bismarck. Before Germany and Britain acquired colonies/territories,they had to fight in order to get those colonies. In order to end these conflicts, they signed the Anglo-German Treaty of 1886.
Here are some of the effects of colonisation of East Africa .They are both positive and negative. NOTE CAREFULLY:The abbreviations below come up as thier full forms as follows;APP:Application,CK:Conceptial Knowledge,CU:Conceptial Understanding(FOR POSITIVE EFFECTS) instead of APP subsitute it with REASON(FOR NEGATIVE EFFECTS) because with negative effects we do not have uses but we have (REASON) for the negative effects. POSITIVE EFFECTS 1.It led to the abolishment of slave trade(CK). When these colonialists came to East Africa, they found out that slave trade was being carried out in East Africa and they abolished it using methods like military force, signing treaties and using missionaries(CU).Missionaries softened the hearts of the slave traders by preaching the word of God(APP).
2.Illiteracy was reduced(CK) When these colonialists came to East Africa, they built schools whereby these schools taught the Africans how to read and write although some refused to learn. These schools used to teach English and after sometime, these Africans learnt English hence making trade and communication easy(APP).This eased trade in a way that their was no language barrier when exchanging goods/services and it also eased communication in a way that the colonialists used to pass on orders to the Africans easily(CU).
3.They improved transport network(CK). These colonialists built transport routes in order to ease trade , transport and tourism(APP).Transport routes like roads and railways eased the transportation of products/harvests from the garden to the market which eased trade(CU).The construction of the Kenya -Uganda Railway eased transportation of raw materials from Kenya to Uganda or even vice versa(CU).It also eased the transportation of tourists from Uganda to Kenya or even vice versa(CU).
4.They led to the introduction of new dressing styles(CK) Before the coming of the colonialists , Africans were putting on their cultural wear styles e.g backcloths(CU).But when the colonialists came, they introduced a new wearing style of long dresses, head caps , knee levelled trousers and long boots(APP).
NEGATIVE EFFECTS 5.Civil wars(CK) Civil wars were due to failure of Africans to collaborate with the colonialists e.g Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda and Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro(CU).When these leaders failed to collaborate , they were exiled to Seychelles Islands hence making these two tribes to riote claiming to bring back(unexile) their leaders resulting into civil wars(REASON).
6.East Africa's resources were exploited(CK) East Africa's resources were exploited by colonialists which is now affecting East Africa by leading to the decline in its economy(CU).Valuable resources like gold, silver e.t.c were exploited which is contributing to the under development of East Africa(REASON).
7.They delayed the independence of East Africans(CK). East Africans wanted to rule themselves(self rule)(CU).Each country wanted to be ruled by people of their race/origin instead of the foreign countries ruling them which also resulted among some Africans(REASON).
In conclusion,I think the above effects are enough to stop ignorance among the present day East Africans. Thank you for you time!!! I am still Mr.Ssenkungu Abubaker Shamran , a History Teacher at Kibuli Secondary School.
