Shawna Patterson-Stephens, Ph.D.
Public Figure
Shawna Patterson-Stephens is an academic and public speaker. Dr. Patterson-Stephens serves as Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Belonging at Central Michigan University. The first Black woman to serve on the cabinet at CMU, Dr. Patterson-Stephens is known for her ability to support increasingly nuanced needs of campus constituencies while uplifting the importance of community outreach. Shawna is an award-winning scholar-practitioner with expertise on climate, culture, recruitment, retention, and belonging in postsecondary settings.
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Shawna graduated valedictorian from Henry Ford High School before enrolling at Central Michigan University in the 1990s. Upon graduating from CMU with a bachelors of science, Dr. Patterson-Stephens earned a masters of arts from Michigan State University, as well as a doctorate from Florida State University.
An accomplished author, Dr. Patterson-Stephens has published several works, including Advancing Inclusive Excellence in Higher Education: Practical Approaches to Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Higher Education.
