Darr @ the Mall (transl. Fear @ the Mall) is a 2014 Indian horror film[3] directed by Pawan Kripalani. The film was released on 21 February 2014[4][5] and stars Jimmy Sheirgill[6] and Nushrat Bharucha in the lead roles. The film was produced by Multi Screen Media and Contiloe Entertainment.[7][8]

Plot

[edit]

A new mall called Amity Mall has opened, owned by Mr Manchanda (Arif Zakaria) and Mr Khan (Asif Basra), who claim it to be Asia's largest mall. The film opens with a security guard talking to someone on the phone. The guard looks paranoid and sees a smokey apparition. He begs it to let him go, but a chase ensues. He makes it to his car but while driving through the ramps of the basement, it crashes. The guard is killed by an unknown force strangling him with the seat belt.

A week later, Vishnu (Jimmy Shergill) applies to become Amity Mall's new head of security. Mr Khan interviews him but is interrupted by Tischa, the marketing director. Mr Khan, Mr Manchanda, Mr Saini, and Tischa watch a news report covering the mysterious death of the security guard. The mall is reputed as being haunted because of the deaths of various construction workers and mall staff, causing people to refrain from working there. However, Mr Khan hires Vishnu after he agrees to the job despite the rumors. In the locker room as Vishnu changes into his uniform, the locker of the previous security guard mysteriously opens and a file falls out. In it, Vishnu finds photographs of camera footage from various areas of the mall with the smokey apparition.

Vishnu catches someone spying on him, who turns out to be a little girl. While he is distracted from questioning her, the girl disappears. Vishnu tries to brush it off and continues to the surveillance room along with his assistant, Rana. He finds some spilled jam in the room, making him suspicious. Vishnu then sends Rana to check the security cameras but in the basement, the storage room door opens by itself. On Vishnu's orders, Rana checks it out, but is killed by the unknown apparition. Vishnu gets some radio static on his walkie talkie a few times, forcing him to go down to the storage room. Unbeknownst to him, Rana's dismembered body parts are stored on a shelf.

At the mall's grand opening, Mr. Khan and Mr. Manchanda inform the media that they will stay at the mall with their kids overnight just to prove that it is not haunted. However, the group is targeted by the same dark figure, who begins killing them off. Meanwhile, Vishnu keeps stumbling upon random objects (a small old box with trinkets, pennies etc.) and encountering the same girl from earlier. After Mr. Khan's son is killed, he exclaims that they should not have done something one night and blames Mr. Manchanda for his son's death. As the group flees, a ghostly dark figure eventually strangles Mr. Khan, leaving only Mr. Manchanda, his daughter Ahana, and Vishnu alive.

They try to escape via AC ducts but an unknown force pulls Vishnu away from the other two. He sees the small girl again, who reminds Vishnu that his name is in fact Arjun and they lived together in an orphanage with 20 other kids, which belonged to Mother and was located where the mall is. One day, Arjun stole some jam and hid in the cupboard. He heard a deal taking place between Mr. Khan, Mr. Manchanda, and Mother for the land on which the orphanage was built, but Mother declined the offer and sent them away. She then found Arjun in the cupboard but heard some commotion and went to check it out. Mother was struck dead by Mr. Khan and their henchmen burned the entire orphanage down, killing its occupants. Arjun was the only survivor but repressed his memories.

Arjun confronts Mr. Manchanda with the truth, but the latter is pulled into the flashback of that night, with Mother and the orphans gruesomely burnt to death. Mr. Manchanda dies the same way before Ahana and Vishnu. Vishnu and Ahana try to flee but she is attacked by Mother, who begins setting her skin on fire too. Vishnu begs Mother to spare Ahana, who had nothing to do with her father's crime, but she refuses to listen. Vishnu then hugs Ahana in order to be killed with her but upon seeing him being burnt too, Mother spares them both. She leaves with the 21 kids in a white light, having attained salvation after completing her revenge. Ahana and Vishnu leave the mall together in bright daylight.
