DDPF, an acronym for Droit des prisonniers français (Rights of French Prisoners), is a Telegram group and a slogan used during to 2025 French prison attacks.
History
[edit]A few days before the attacks, a Telegram group called "DDPF" ('Defence of the rights of French prisoners') was created.[1] In this channel, messages were shared targeting prison guards and French prison authorities, including statements such as "Guards, resign while you still can if you care about your families and loved ones" and "Know that our movement is spreading throughout France".[1] In this group, the militants stated that they intended to act in this way in response to prison overcrowding (131% occupancy), among other issues.[1] They claimed not to be terrorists but to act in defence of human rights, which they said were under threat.[1]
Aftermath
[edit]In the early stages of the investigation, two main leads were considered: either the group was anarchist or it was linked to drug trafficking networks—a position supported by Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin.[2] The anarchist lead however became increasingly unlikely as the investigation turned towards drug trafficking.[3] A first potential member—a former inmate on semi-release, suspected by French authorities of belonging to the group—was arrested on 16 April 2025, in Essonne.[4]
