The Cardinal protodeacon is the most senior cardinal of the diaconal order, an order of four Roman deacons who assist the Holy Father in his duties as Bishop of Rome. If several cardinals have the same seniority, priority falls to the prelate named first on the list of cardinals created at the consistory.
Since October 28, 2024, the Cardinal Protodeacon has been Dominique Mamberti, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, created cardinal by Pope Francis in the consistory of February 14, 2015.
Duties
[change | change source]The cardinal protodeacon, if he is an elector, has the task of announcing the election of the new pope by reciting the famous formula "Habemus Papam" Otherwise, this task is performed by the first of the cardinal deacon electors.
Furthermore, the Cardinal Protodeacon imposes the pallium on the newly elected Pope during the Eucharistic celebration of the inauguration of the papal ministry; he presents the metropolitans who are to receive the pallium from the Pope during the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29); and he announces the granting of the plenary indulgence when the Pope imparts the Urbi et Orbi blessing at Christmas and Easter.
In these functions, the Cardinal Protodeacon, in case of absence or impediment, is replaced by the second in precedence Cardinal Deacon, who is currently Mario Zenari, since October 28, 2024.
