Anthology Collection ist eine Boxset-Zusammenstellung der britischen Gruppe The Beatles, die die Alben Anthology 1 bis 4 beinhaltet. Das Boxset wurde als remasterten Neuauflage der Anthology-Alben zum 30-jährigen Jubiläum konzipiert. Anthology Collection erschien am 21. November 2025.

Entstehung

George Martin begann am 22. Mai 1995 mit der gelegentlichen Unterstützung von Paul McCartney, George Harrison und Ringo Starr rund 600 Aufnahmen der Beatles anzuhören, für die Alben der Anthology-Serie auszuwählen, diese dann zu editieren und neu abzumischen. Es wurde anschließend die Entscheidung getroffen drei Doppel-CDs (Anthology 1, 2 und 3) in den Jahren 1995 und 1996 zu veröffentlichen, die die musikalische Entwicklung der Beatles chronologisch widerspiegeln. Die drei Doppel-Alben enthalten Aufnahmen früher Auftritte, Demos, Studio-Outtakes und unveröffentlichte Titel aus den Jahren 1958–1970 und vermitteln so einen Eindruck über die musikalische Entwicklung der Gruppe und gewährten darüber hinaus erstmals einen Einblick in die Studioarbeit der Beatles.

Alle drei Alben wurden sowohl als CD als auch auf Vinyl und Cassette veröffentlicht. Die drei Alben waren kommerziell erfolgreich und erreichten unter anderem jeweils den ersten Platz der US-amerikanischen Album-Charts.

Weitere unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen der Beatles erschienen ab 2003. Ab 2017 folgten Wiederveröffentlichungen anlässlich von Veröffentlichungsjubiläen von Alben mit umfangreichen Bonusmaterial.

Am 21. August 2025 wurde das Boxset Anthology Collection, bestehend aus den vier Doppel-CDs oder Vier-Dreifach-Vinylalben Anthology 1 bis 4, offiziell angekündigt, zusammen mit der dreiteiligen Disney+-Premiere der nun remasterten und erweiterten Dokumentations-Serie The Beatles Anthology am 26. November.[1][2]

Die physischen Editionen von Anthology 4, die auch die 2025er Überarbeitungen von Free as a Bird und Real Love enthalten, waren ursprünglich als Exklusivtitel für das Boxset der Anthology Collection geplant, aber durch Nachfragen potentieller Käufer wurde das Album auch als eigenständige Doppel-CD oder Drei-LP-Veröffentlichung erhältlich.[3] Die Alben Anthology 1, 2 und 3, die nicht wieder einzeln erhältlich wurden, wurden von Giles Martin remastert, sodass die Klangqualität deutlich angehoben wurde.

In einer Rezension von superdeluxeedition.com wird erwähnt, das zum Beispiel „That’ll Be The Day und In Spite of All the Danger nun einen zuvor fehlenden Mitteltonbereich und einen volleren Klang haben, und die Gesangsstimmen nun klarer sind.“ Weiterhin wird davon ausgegangen, das die KI von Peter Jackson, die für die Fertigstellung der 2023er letzten Beatles-Single Now and Then verwendet wurde, auch bei der Restauration weiterer Lieder eingesetzt wurde. So wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Liveversion von Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby sowie der Take 1 von I’m Looking Through You, beide aus der Anthology 2, neu abgemischt wurden. Es wird weiterhin angemerkt, dass noch unveröffentlichte Lieder, wie das 27-minütige Helter Skelter, Suzy Parker, The Palace of The King of The Birds, Watching Rainbows und Carnival of Light für die Wiederveröffentlichung nicht verwendet wurden.[4]

Das Nachrichtenportal usatoday.com schreibt, dass einige Lieder, die auf den 1995/1996er-Versionen in Mono erhältlich waren für die Wiederveröffentlichung in Stereo umgewandelt wurden, so das Demo von Strawberry Fields Forever. Weiterhin wurde die Liveversion All My Loving aus der Ed Sullivan Show und die Liveversion von Help! aus der Fernsehübertragung The Blackpool Night Out neu abgemischt.[5]

Covergestaltung

Die Gestaltung der drei korrespondierenden Albumcover (nebeneinandergelegt ergeben sie ein Gesamtbild) stammt von Klaus Voormann, einem Freund der Beatles aus den Hamburger Tagen Anfang der 1960er Jahre, und dem Fotorealisten Alfons Kiefer. Die vier Doppel-CDs befinden sich in vier jeweils zweifach aufklappbaren Pappcovern. Die vier CDs/vier Doppel-Vinyl-Alben befinden sich in einem Pappschuber. Die Covergestaltung des Pappschubers zeigt die drei Cover der Alben Anthology 1 bis 3 mittig nebeneinander, unterhalb steht ‚Anthology Collection‘. Anthology 1, 2 und 4 enthalten jeweils ein 48-seitige und Anthology 3 ein 44-seitiges CD-Booklet. Die Booklets der Alben Anthology 1 bis 3 enthalten umfangreiche Notizen zu jedem Lied von Mark Lewisohn, Anthology 4 von Kevin Howlett sowie jeweils eine Einführung von Derek Taylor.

Anthology Highlights (2025)

Am 29. August 2025 wurde im Vorwege der Veröffentlichung der Anthology Collection das Streaming-Kompilationsalbum Anthology Highlights veröffentlicht. Ursprünglich veröffentlichte iTunes am 14. Juni 2011 das Download-Kompilationsalbum Anthology Highlights, das 23 Lieder enthält.[6] Das Anthology Highlights-Album von 2025 enthält folgende 32 Lieder, davon acht, die auf Anthology 1, elf die auf Anthology 2, sieben die auf Anthology 3 und sechs die auf Anthology 4 enthalten sind.[7]
