Abner Cohen

Abner Cohen (* 11. November 1921 in Bagdad; † 17. Mai 2001 in Oxford) war ein britischer Ethnologe und Hochschullehrer.

Leben und Wirken

Abner Cohen lebte nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg mit seiner Familie zunächst in Israel, wo er u. a. als Schulinspektor tätig war. Erst spät begann er mit dem Studium der Ethnologie und legte an der University of London 1958 die Magisterprüfung ab. Anschließend wechselte er an die University of Manchester, wo er 1961 zum Ph.D. promovierte. Für die Erarbeitung seiner Dissertation betrieb er ethnologische Feldforschung in Israel und untersuchte Palästinensersiedlungen in den dortigen Grenzgebieten. Als Hochschullehrer war er dann an der School of Oriental and African Studies in London tätig und wurde dort 1972 Professor. Im Jahre 1985 trat er in den Ruhestand. Mit seiner Familie zog er nach Oxford um und beteiligte sich dort u. a. an Lehrveranstaltungen der Universität im Bereich Ethnologie. Feldforschungen unternahm Cohen in Nigeria (1962/3) und in Sierra Leone (1969/70). In seinen Veröffentlichungen beschäftigte sich Cohen vor allem mit politischen Aspekten der Ethnologie in Westafrika. In seinem letzten Buch untersuchte er den Notting Hill Carnival in London.
