Ability with Innovation (AWI) is a construction company based in Iraq with its services being active across the Middle East. It focuses on Engineering and Design, Construction, and Real Estate. It was founded in 1970 by engineer Abdul Mahdi Muslim Tahir Al-Jubouri.[1]
Corporate history
[edit]Early history
[edit]
In 1970, Al-Jubouri began his private business in Baghdad, Iraq, acquiring a contracting license from the Iraqi Contracting Union. The 1970s saw substantial investment in infrastructure due to increased oil revenues following the nationalization of the Iraqi Petroleum Company. During that time, the government prioritized technology, education, and infrastructure projects.[2]
From 1980 to 1988, during the Iran–Iraq War, oil revenues were diverted to fund the Iraqi Army, causing economic difficulties.[3][4] Abdul Mahdi then joined the army, and the company shifted its business model to investing in the stock market and renting heavy equipment to the Ministry of Housing and Construction. [citation needed]
In 1985, the Iraqi Contracting Union required all contractors to register with the Ministry of Trade and operate under a company license issued by the government, resulting in the establishment of the Abdul Mahdi Muslim Company.[1]
From 1991 to 2003, the United Nations sanctions significantly slowed the Iraqi economy, impacting the company’s construction activities. During this period, the company continued to trade in the Iraqi stock market and generated revenue through dividends from prior capital investments.[5]
Recent History
[edit]In July 2005, Al-Jubouri's son, A bather Al-Jubouri, was appointed the company's new CEO.[1] The company secured contracts with new clients, including Fluor, Aim Group, and Spectrum Worldwide.[1] Several affiliated companies were established, serving the Government of Iraq, the U.S. Government, and commercial entities. These included Gruppo Cardini SRL, Spectrum Worldwide (joint venture), Caesar Trading & Construction, LLC, and FIC Consultants Engineering.[citation needed]
In September 2011, during Mr. Al-Jubouri's time as CEO, all subsidiaries were merged to form a single group, and the company name was changed to AWI – Ability with Innovation.[citation needed]
