Shootings
[edit]Dispatchers received a report of a shooting at around 12:12 p.m. at a home at 210 Park Avenue.[2] Officers and medical personnel discovered four people inside with gunshot wounds, all of whom were pronounced dead on scene. The shooter fled before officers arrived at the scene. The gunman was later found by police on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers later found a man dead from a gunshot wound inside a home at 1509 Mill Street and another man dead from an apparent gunshot wound at a business at 808 Grandview Avenue.[3][4]
Victims
[edit]All six people killed are believed to be family members of the gunman. Among the victims were two employees and two students of the Muscatine Community School District.[5]
Perpetrator
[edit]Law enforcement identified the perpetrator as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, a resident of Muscatine. According to law enforcement, McFarland had a criminal record, though law enforcement officials did not elaborate his previous crimes.[6] However, KWQC reported that McFarland had previous convictions for child endangerment resulting in death in 2012 and fraudulent practices in 2019.[7]
