리차드 핼버슨(The Reverend Richard Christian Halverson)은 1916년 미국 노스다코타주(North Dakota)의 핑리(Pingree)에서 태어났다.[1] 밸리시티 주립대(Valley City State University, Valley City State Teacher College)에 출석하였으며, 일리노이스 주 휘튼에 있는 휘튼 칼리지(Wheaton College)에서 1939년 과학사(Bachelor of Science) 학위를 취득하고, Wheaton College Men's Glee Club에도 참여하였다. 프린스턴(Princeton Theological Seminary)에서 신학사(Bachelor of Theology)를 취득하였다.[2][3]

그는 1958년부터 1981년까지 교단(United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America) 총회장으로 섬겼으며, 벳세다 제4장로교회(Fourth Presbyterian Church, Bethesda, Maryland)의 원로목사(Senior Pastor)이다. 1981년 2월부터 1994년 12월 31일까지 미국 상원 채플목사(Chaplain)로 섬겼다. 1956년에 시작한 국가 조찬기도회(National Prayer Breakfast) 운동의 일원이었다. 월드비전(World Vision)의 위원(1956년 ~ 1983년) 및 위원장(1966년 ~ 1983년)이기도 했다. 워싱턴DC에 있는 자선재단 Concern Ministries의 대표이기도 했다.

배우자는 Doris Grace Halverson (née Seaton)이며 자녀 셋을 두었다.
