VSS Unity（ヴァージン宇宙船”Unity"、機体記号：N202VG）は、以前VSS Voyagerと呼ばれいたスペースシップツークラスの弾道ロケット搭載の有人スペースプレーンである。2番目に製造されたのスペースシップツーであり、ヴァージン・ギャラクティック船団の一部として使用される。

2016年2月19日に、宇宙船は公開され[1] [2] 、2016年9月8日に初飛行する前に、2016年9月に地上ベースのシステム統合テストを完了した [3] [4]。2018年12月13日、宇宙船は50マイル (80 km)以上の高度に達した [5]。

概要

VSS Unityは、ヴァージン・ギャラクティックの2番目のスペースシップツー弾道スペースプレーンである[6]。またスペースシップ・カンパニーによって製造された最初のスペースシップツーである。

2016年2月19日に、宇宙船の名前が発表された[5]。命名発表前は、スペースシップツー、シリアルナンバー2と呼ばれていた[7] [8]。

2004年に、シリアルナンバー2にVSS Voyagerという名前が付けられるとの憶測がありましたが[9]、メディア報道で繰り返し使用された非公式の名称[10] [11] [12]。Unityという名前は、英国の物理学者スティーヴン・ホーキングによって選ばれた。ホーキングの目は、Unityの側面にある目のロゴのモデルとしても使用されている[13]。

歴史

建造中のVSS Unity

2012年、Unityの製造は始まりました[14]。2014年9月に、N202VGの宇宙船登録が提出されました[15]。2014年11月初旬の時点で、Unityのビルドは構造的に約90％完了し、全体で65％完了した。

2015年4月の時点で、Unityの初期地上試験は、2015年半ばに予測された後、2015年後半に開始できると予測されていた[16] [17] [18]。

2015年5月21日、Unityは機体の重量を自輪で支えるというマイルストーンに到達しました[19]。2016年2月19日に宇宙船は発表されました[20]。ヴァージン・ギャラクティックの創設者であるリチャード・ブランソンが2015年11月に予測したとおりであった。その後、地上および飛行試験が開始された[21] [22]。

VSS Unityは、2番目に完成したスペースシップツー。VSS Enterpriseは、2014年10月下旬のクラッシュで破壊されている[23] [24]。

展開と発表の後、2016年2月にVSS Unityで「システム統合テスト（英語版）」と呼ばれる段階試験が開始された[25]。
