Although it is true that CIF is rarely used anymore, it was the primary method of specifying integrated-circuit chips for some time. This description is from my book (Computer Aids for VLSI Design) which I publish free on my website. The site gets many hits because it is still referenced. I thought Wikipedia ought to have it, too.
