Why is there an incentive to join the wikipedia:collaboration of the week, when that page is inactive? Mortsggah 07:56, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

British currency

I tried to add some info that I considered missing . This is my first attempt at doing anything active on the Net. I tried to add some facts about the "crown" and the "guinea". Was I of any help???Alex marcus 14:49, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Chocolate Milk Gone

I removed the phrase and replaced it with the prior wording. Thanks for pointing it out! Kabethme 20:42, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Jonathan Vilma

I am currently reading up on him, and in his sophomore season at Miami it says he "compiled 20 forced fumbles", now I don't know the exact number, but I extremely doubt he caused quite that many fumbles, and then followed in his Junior with less than 3 forced fumbles.. if someone knows could they fix that up? 70.77.126.32 19:25, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Watch out for vandalism

Apologies

--dan1024 11:16, 12 November 2007 (UTC) I too am new to editing Wikipedia, and now I realize that instead of editing out the vandalism I spotted I should have simply reverted the page to a clean version. All apologies. Kabethme 17:52, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Contractions

Just fixed a few contractions (don't, isn't, you've, etc.). Did not mean to make so many versions. In the future I will edit the entire page at once instead of each part. If anyone disagrees with the slight changes I made, I apologize. Just trying to follow the Manual of style while reading up on things. Maximus23623 (talk) 14:36, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Moved from Wikipedia talk:Tutorial (Keep in mind):
Given the conversational tone in which this article is written, I should think this unnecessary, and a rather superfluous edit. Contractions are standard English, and have been for years (yes, I've read WP:Manual_of_Style#Punctuation, but this article is not written in a formal style).
In fact, in such an article, contractions can be more forceful than their constituents. For example, I have heard that "don't" is one of the strongest words in the English language, much more than "do not". (specifically, this comes from Negativland's Freedom's Waiting.) superlusertc 2007 December 07, 16:34 (UTC)

Civility messages

Dear WIKIPEDIA people:

It is now the SECOND TIME i get civility messages warning me of this and that when i did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! First time, someone accused me of uploading unprotected images, DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO THAT, the person eventually apologized. The second, i was accused of ADDING DEFAMATORY INFO to an article, and WAS THREATENED WITH PERMANENT BLOCKING!!! What i did was correct an article that was conceived in very poor english, if the vandalism was there it was previous to my inputs. WHAT IS THIS??!!!

ALL i acknowledge of doing was INSULTING people that deserve to be insulted, MORE, they deserve to be BANNED from here, because they are VANDALS!!! I tend to contribut in the areas of SPORTS and MUSIC, and the former subject is one of the favorites to vandalize, you all know how the story goes in the world of sports. THOSE PEOPLE REALLY TICK ME OFF!!!

If any of you wants to block me permanently, okeydokey, just consider that it is a measure of the UTMOST UNFAIRNESS, i only want to help!!!

SINCERELY, FROM PORTUGAL VASCO AMARAL (user nº217.129.67.28)

I took have experienced accusations of vandalism when I've made valid changes because some other person didn't agree with it, and they've been here longer. Now I just add notes to the talk pages because otherwise people say you're a rotten vandal. (Last time it was because I capitalised DMD, which I was advised it wasn't a proper noun, even though that's how it's referred to by many sources / institutions.) Isn't there a page round here 'be nice to the newbies'. Then another 'don't advise the regs' or something, because if they same something it's not vandalism, it's just incorrect. But if it's a newbie, it's vandalism. (144.32.155.5 (talk) 23:19, 18 January 2008 (UTC))

Multi-monitor

It is recommended that Wikipedians use a multi-monitor setup, as this greatly increases the efficiency of copying and pasting urls, references, quotes, etc. Captain Zyrain 19:23, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

(removed some spam) And good idea, Zyrain! thanks. --dan1024 11:16, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

given that about 97% of students, in recent surveys, use a laptop computer, I dont think this is necessarily a very important or realistic first step. I might as well advise everyone to start off by getting a 24 inch monitor. DGG (talk) 02:21, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

"merge pages"

somehow, I don't think merging pages (as distinguished from making links) is quite the ideal thing to suggest that people start out with. Though certainly often very much needed, doing it appropriately takes at the least a considerable knowledge of the general layout and nature of WP pages, and the organization of the pages relating to a general topic. And, personally, there's a little mergist bias that not everyone shares--I might just as well suggest people start off by splitting pages where they think something deserves an article of its own, also something often needed, but not the first thing to do when someone comes here. Anyone thinking about doing either really ought to first find an appropriate WikiProject. I intend to do the first thing that occurs to me, and be BOLD and delete that paragraph, MERGing the suggestion for linking somewhere else on that page. DGG (talk) 02:19, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Neils Mortenson

Neils Mortenson is incorrect founder if Pinedale. His name is Niels Petersen he was married to Mary Mortenson.

He and the Mortenson family founded Pinedale AZ. He named the town after his wifes maiden name.

Wikipedia:Pages needing attention

Start with what you know invites people to visit Wikipedia:Pages needing attention but that page says it is now just an historical archive. Is there a better place to send people? --Northernhenge (talk) 09:52, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

{{Resources for collaboration}} shows a whole bunch of places for people to go, but unfortunately that template is not a beginner-friendly starting point. --Teratornis (talk) 17:41, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

We need to update this page

I'm in a lazy mood today, so I'll just write down what I think needs be changed about this page and do them later.

  • Discussions are also a very important part of Wikipedia editing. We should have a section in this page all about what kinds of discussions there are, how they work, the importance of civility, etc etc.
  • We should probably expand and be more clear about each area of Wikipedia. Such as explaining how each area works and some of the most important rules that govern them.
  • It's beyond me why this page hasn't included a link to WP:BOLD yet. Be bold in your editing! Don't be afraid! Learn from mistakes and move on!
  • According to Article Feedback, readers want pictures, specific instructions on how to create articles, how to copy-edit, and how to edit Wikipedia in general.
    • A big thing they want is a large and clear link to the Article Wizard.

These are just issues I came up with at a glance. Maybe when I'm in a more productive mood I can actually carry out these tasks or write more things down to do. Michaelzeng7 (talk) 21:45, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

"All human knowledge"

I think that this article shouldn't begin "Wikipedia's goal is to compile the sum of all human knowledge" when we then expend a great deal of effort at WP:NOT disabusing people of this notion. —Largo Plazo (talk) 04:57, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Done I've changed it. I think the phrase was originally intended a nod to Jimmy Wales' quote in 2004: "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing." --Mz7 (talk) 03:47, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Reader feedback: This page is apparently supp...

101.82.96.106 posted this comment on 4 June 2013 (view all feedback).

This page is apparently supposed to explain the basics of how one might contribute an article. But it provides no answers itself and merely directs the potential contributor to other pages. Most importantly, it remains entirely unclear after reading the page exactly how a potential contributor can simply define or pick his own new topic and submit an article on the newly proposed topic instead of editing an existing article or picking a topic from a list at another site page. In fact, it appears that I will have to continuing researching the site in order to learn if it is even possible to identify a new topic and simply submit the proposed article. This site page actually seems to intentionally omit this option and appears to encourage a contributor to edit existing articles or produce a new article from existing lists. It would be good if at least the basic steps concerning the full range of contribution options were plainly spelled-out directly and fully under the category "how to contribute."

Any thoughts?

Smtchahal (talk) 15:17, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Yes, this page is very sketchy. We need to seriously revamp it as it's clearly unhelpful to aspiring Wikipedians. As the anonymous user said, we should turn this page into a detailed "how to contribute" guide instead of a "here's a place where you can contribute, go over there and figure out how it works" page. Duplicated paragraphs on this page

According to a Siteliner report, this page contains several paragraphs that were copied and pasted into other policies and guidelines. Should these duplicated paragraphs be merged?

For example, this entire paragraph is included in 3 different help pages in Wikipedia:

Before starting a new article please understand Wikipedia's notability requirements. In short, the topic of an article must have already been the subject of publication in reliable sources, such as books published by major publishing houses, newspapers, magazines, peer-reviewed scholarly journals and websites that meet the same requirements as reputable print-based sources. Information on Wikipedia must be verifiable; if no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, then it should not have a separate article. Wikipedia's concept of notability applies this basic standard to avoid indiscriminate inclusion of topics.

Jarble (talk) 06:46, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

I don't understand what you mean by a merger? This is a parent article that leads to main pages on the topics....having the same intro in a few places is fine. Its in a few places because it says what it says well....lots copied from other pages because its consensus wording. Dont think people will want to merger all the tutorials into one page, as they all present the same info in different formats. I written more about this problem at H:?...personally I would love to see just one intro...but if you look at Help:Contents/Directory I have listed how big the problem is. --Moxy (talk) 23:36, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

AmberShank (talk) 20:29, 4 November 2015 (UTC) I had sent in a request for edit and received a nasty email stating I was "soapboxing." It I sent in a company history. Not sure what I did wrong.

@AmberShank: You put your submission in the wrong place. This is the page for suggesting improvements to the page Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia, not for submitting new articles. I took a look at what you wrote here before, and I think you need to read the information at WP:PROMO and WP:PSCOI as what you wrote looks very promotional and you probably have a conflict of interest with regard to the article you're trying to submit. If you feel that you would like to try and write that article and you can back it up with reliable third-party sources, then check out the information at WP:YFA. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly on my talk page, or check out the Teahouse. Thanks, ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 20:45, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Wiki

How do i put my history in so it will show on google web page Trentonjpilkington (talk) 00:09, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Trentonjpilkington:
I'm sorry but if you are thinking of creating an article about yourself, the advice is probably "don't". See this page. The only people to have articles about them on Wikipedia are those who have achieved enough prominence for others to have written about them in a number of reputable publications. The full guideline is here.
The other thing is that we discourage editors from writing about themselves here, as we regard this as a "conflict of interest".
You are very welcome to improve articles about "notable" topics or create new ones. Reading How to edit and Your first article may help you get started: Noyster (talk), 09:18, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
