Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana is considered one of Indonesia's early nationalists. According to an article written by Edward Aspinall, "Takdir knew that history could be a servant of 'culture', and that writing a national history primarily aimed to construct a unified cultural identity upon which to base claims for independent statehood. In creating a cultural basis for the new Indonesia, he argued that Indonesian nationalists should seek inspiration in the future rather than the past, and accept that the Indonesian nationalist dea was derived from the twentieth century, modernity and the West" (Aspinall 130). <Edward Aspinall chapter 8 Modernity, history and ethnicity Indonesian and Acehnese nationalism in conflict p 128-145>
