Jurist stubs

Could use some pruning - though not oversized, it contains 504 stubs on its own. Might I suggest Category:European jurist stubs as a subcat? It would be populated by either {{Euro-jurist-stub}} or individual country templates. I'm in favor of the latter, but would consider the former as well. Thoughts? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:19, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Support principal, but are not existing templates for European countries at {{Foo-law-bio-stub}} in which case I would think we are better off sticking to using -law-bio-stub instead of -jursit-stub. Also I would suggest using national templates for ost nations with a {{Europe-law-bio-stub}} to mop up the countries with only a couple of articles. Waacstats (talk) 23:59, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Again it';s worth pointing out that the term jurist has different meanings on the two sides of the Atlantic, too, which may add to the confusion. Grutness...wha? 00:14, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
...I knew that. Sorry.
's what I get for suggesting stub tags while half-asleep... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:21, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Looks like it could be useful, at least as a template - not sure about category yet. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:15, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Support template, category iff we get it to 60. Waacstats (talk) 23:55, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

More South American actor stubs

{{Peru-actor-stub}} and {{Colombia-actor-stub}} are both viable, though I don't think either will need a category yet. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:07, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Speedy support based on precedant, and categories iff we have 60. Waacstats (talk) 23:54, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Amazed we don't have this yet. Category:Chilean actor stubs would be the category, if necessary (which it may be, actually...not sure yet.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:01, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

South Sudan stubs

As per the referendum of last month, Southern Sudan is going to become independent (as South Sudan) in July of this year. Is it too early to discuss creating stub tags for the new country? I don't see that we have any as yet. I think we'll need:

I can't imagine that there will be any others yet. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:46, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

  • Discussion's already started here. It's also mentioned on the Discoveries page due to the discovery of {{SouthernSudan-stub}}. I think it is still too soon to make them, since the name of the new country's still not been formalised AFAIK, but once it is it'll be a good idea to start, and those four make perfect sense. Grutness...wha? 21:33, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps I had misread, or it was misquoted in the media, but I think "South Sudan" has since been formalized. There was some comment about other names being bandied about, but not being adopted. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:57, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, if that's the official one, it'd be the one to use (just a case of finding confirmation, I guess...) Grutness...wha? 23:33, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
I have no problem with the idea here but our articles seem to use Southern Sudan at the moment so that would be where I would suggest calling the templates, better yet I think would be to hold off completley till we have a confirmed name. Waacstats (talk) 23:53, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Mind you, making them at one name with redirects at the other might make sense - we can always reverse the redirects if necessary. It sounds like the only names being used by the media and by the (Southern) Sudanese themselves are these two. Grutness...wha? 00:12, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
That of course assumes that they don't eventually decide on some other name. Waacstats (talk) 16:29, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

British sport stubs

As per the discussion below:

By constituent country (each to include relevant football club and sportspeople stub categories)

Sports venues with approximate numbers - categories if 60 threshold reached.

I'm not entirely sure how to sort English sports venue stubs - I was thinking to create templates for each region but many of the regions already have subcategories on the county level - but creating county level sports venue templates seems a bit extreme. SeveroTC 12:51, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

I think this looks good, I don't see any reason for splitting the English sports venues just yet, don't forget the bio stubs for Wales and NI Sports stubs. Waacstats (talk) 13:42, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Support all suggestions. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:58, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Permcat Category:Content management systems. At least a template is due here. Possibly able to support a category. Category to be built only if 60 articles found. Dawynn (talk) 15:03, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Tidying this up a bit and it looks like a {{Argentina-rugbyunion-team-stub}} would be of use, don't know for sure if it would hit 60 but would certainly get more use than any of the current upmerged templates (England, France, Ireland, Italy, Australia, NewZealand and SouthAfrica) though they are probably under used. Category:Argentine rugby union team stubs iff it gets to 60.Waacstats (talk) 15:01, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Not enough for a category as yet, but I think the above would be most helpful in at least helping out with sorting. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:56, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

I submitted two templates at WP:AFC yesterday, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Template:Old West-book-stub and Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Template:Old West-geo-stub, but was told to submit them here. I think they qualify under the second clause for "speedy creation" as a sub-category of Category:United States history stubs (see {{US-hist-book-stub}}). The vast majority of articles in Category:American Old West stubs are currently either books or historical locations. 72.74.206.120 (talk) 10:50, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

The geo stub cat would not be a good idea and given the fact that the parent only contains 47 articles I would have to say no to the book stub as well. Waacstats (talk) 21:31, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
I agree. Certainly geo-stubs only use current locations, so they should be in whichever state or subdivision of state that is appropriate, with any "Old West-stub" (how did it slip through with a non-standard name?) as a secondary stub type. In any case "the vast majority" is of a very small category. Soince the standard size of thinking about splitting a category into subtypes is around 800 stubs, there's no point whatsoever at present of even considering other templates - and when we do, they should be at names in line with the naming conventions for stub templates. Grutness...wha? 22:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Agreed with Big G. Aelfthrytha (talk) 02:43, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
"Big G"??? :) Grutness...wha? 05:55, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Sri Lanka geo

This may be a two-stage process including "superspeedying" at the first stage... Category:Sri Lanka geography stubs is waaay oversized (2200 stubs)... but that's because several of the provinces do not yet have their own subcategories. I propose:

The second stage, then, obviously, would be to find subcategories for Central Province. It's divided into three districts, which are each divided into an average of a dozen divisional secretariats. It seems very likely that the three districts at least should each have their own template (and probably category. That would mean creating:

Grutness...wha? 21:55, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Support all. a.) it's not a bad idea, and b.) I think I may be responsible for some of that... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:35, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Update - I've done the first part, but it looks like very few of the stubs for CentralLK have details of which district they're in... Grutness...wha? 23:01, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

{{USSR-mil-ship-stub}} template

{{Software-dev-stub}} template

Upmerge template for Category:Software stubs. Some articles belonging in software development are misclassified in Category:Software engineering stubs, a more specific category, and I can't fix them now without losing specificity. (Main category is Category:Software development.) --Pnm (talk) 21:14, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

good idea, just not sure about whether to go with -dev- or -development- , dev could have other meanings. Waacstats (talk) 15:59, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Support either suffix...perhaps "development" would be better. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:20, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Needs clarification. I'm a computer programmer, and I'm even having trouble working out the fine line between {{software-dev-stub}}, {{compu-prog-stub}}, and {{software-eng-stub}}. OK, maybe software engineering is more of the higher-level concepts. But where do we draw a line between computer programming and software development? Please define how this new template would be used, and how its use would be distinctly different than {{compu-prog-stub}}. Dawynn (talk) 15:22, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Add {{programming-software-stub}} to the list of fairly similar categories. Although this one is specific to software used in programming. (But libraries are covered under {{compu-library-stub}}) Dawynn (talk) 11:48, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
The hierarchy is like this:
Examples:
In some individual cases the distinction may fall apart. Articles can go in more than one if it's really necessary. When specific subcategories are created, placement becomes more clear. I'm trying to fill out the bottom of the hierarchy so articles like Bus factor, Custom software development, and Point release can accurately be placed. They aren't part of software engineering. --Pnm (talk) 23:51, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

{{GUI-stub}} template

{{File-format-stub}} template

Upmerge template for overpopulated Category:Computing stubs. --Pnm (talk) 21:14, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

another good idea for a template that will hopefully help to cut down its overpopulated parent. Waacstats (talk) 16:01, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Support --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:20, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Tentative support -- I would start by adding such articles to Category:Software type stubs. Although there may be some use in subcategorizing out the file formats, this category was where I was dumping file formats when I was sorting these guys in the past. Dawynn (talk) 15:26, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't mind if this is an upmerge template for Category:Software type stubs instead of Category:Computing stubs. However I don't feel quite right saying Archive file is "an article related to a type of software." The difference between software and a file format is obscure to some readers, and this inaccuracy would further confuse them. --Pnm (talk) 00:20, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Surprisingly, very few of these are broken down by country. Now, the category isn't exactly oversized yet, but I think it could still stand work. So here's what I suggest: creation of all the following that don't exist yet.

Category:French sculptor stubs, Category:Italian sculptor stubs, and Category:United Kingdom sculptor stubs all exist, as does Category:Serbian sculptor stubs. The latter only has seven articles, and can be happily dismantled, I think. That should pave the way for a general-use Category:European sculptor stubs. Howsabout that? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:24, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Not enough for a full category, but it would help to break down Category:Canadian artist stubs. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:29, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Women-hist-stub

Propose creating {{Women-hist-stub}} and Category:Women's history stubs as a sub-category of Category:History stubs. Some items might additionally be marked with bio-stub.

This is a stub needed for Wikipedia:WikiProject Women's History, which has identified 580 articles so far at WP:WMNHIST#Relevant_entries. ---Shane Landrum (cliotropic) 17:07, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

This might be better as a wikiproject talkpage template especially as bios aren't normally marked with a {{hist-stub}}. Waacstats (talk) 18:13, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Would it be more appropriate to split this into two stubs templates and related categories: {{women-bio-stub}} and Category:Women's biography stubs for biographical items, and {{women-hist-stub}} and Category:Women's history stubs for events, groups, laws, etc? If so, do I need to file a separate proposal for the biographical stubs? ---Shane Landrum (cliotropic | talk | contribs) 18:22, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure - we don't ordinarily create biographical stubs by gender alone. What sort of biographical items are you talking about? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:00, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Several comments -

  1. since we already have {{fem-stub}} for articles relating to feminism, perhaps {{fem-history-stub}} would be better? I realise the two topics are not identical, but there would be considerable overlap.
  2. we've largely moved to using "history" rather than "hist", though hist would still be suitable for a redirect.
  3. I'm not really in favour of a separate woman-bio-stub using that name, since it's likely that many editors will misiterpret it to mean "biographies of women". A {{fem-bio-stub}}, for people associated with feminist studies or historically with women's causes would be approriate, though. Grutness...wha? 23:02, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't know what the procedure is here, but just noting that I'd like to see this stub be created. It would be good to be able to identify articles about female historical figures, whether bios or not, that need to be expanded. They won't all be connected to feminism; in fact, most won't be.
The idea for the Wikiproject Women's History arose out of the recent efforts to increase women's participation and visibility on Wikipedia, so it would help to have a stub tag to encourage article creation and expansion. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 07:02, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm just concerned that some editors might assume {{women-bio-stub}} would be used for all biographical articles about women. There'd have to be pretty stringent wording of both the template and category, and regular checks (similar to the way that WP:Judaism try to make sure that Jewish-bio-stub is used for people notable for their connection to Judaism rather than simply people who follow the Jewish faith). Grutness...wha? 21:30, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Reiterating request. This proposal was made in the early days of the Women's History project, and some of these issues have been discussed there. One of our obstacles at first was the tendency for eager editors to plaster every bio of a woman with the WH project banner, including BLPs of pop stars. We now have criteria to control that. The stub template, of course, is different, since it's independent of the project per se, while useful to it. The stub template in my view is not meant for biographies, but to facilitate the development of topics within women's history. Several needed articles have been mentioned at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's History that could be begun as stubs. I ended up here today because I needed a stub template for Movement for the Ordination of Women that placed it within the field of women's history as well as Anglican church history. I'd like to start a stub for Ladies' aid societies, for instance. That said, there are a number of historically significant but lesser known women who are notable enough for articles, and whose articles might benefit from a debut as a stub that marks the topic as of interest to women's history. So I don't know what to do about that. But I would like to see a Women's History stub template become available. Cynwolfe (talk) 19:46, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
  • I think that the original requested wording was correct with the change to expanding hist to history. {{Women-history-stub}} and Category:Women's history stubs as a sub-category of Category:History stubs. Category:History stubs would be the top level category for these articles the same way that it is the top level category for stubs about Military history (which also contains biographies.) I would like to see this happen soon since the Women's History Project is working on locating existing articles and doing assessments. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 19:55, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
