The USC Signal and Image Processing Institute (SIPI) is a research institute within the USC Viterbi School of Engineering focused on signal and image processing.

History and Research

SIPI was established in 1971 (initially as the USC Image Processing Institute, or IPI) by Professors William K. Pratt and Harry C. Andrews under a contract from ARPA (contract No. F08606-72-C-0008[1]). At the time of its founding, SIPI/IPI was among the first university groups in the world dedicated to image processing research[2][3]. In addition to performing fundamental research, it was also a key member of the ARPANET (the foundation for the modern internet) where it provided image processing hardware and software services for other members of the network[4].

In the early 1970s, SIPI/IPI research focused on the basic theory of image processing with applications to image compression and image transmission/communication (including much of the early work on transform coding), image restoration and enhancement (including topics such as denoising, super-resolution, and color enhancement), and image analysis[1]. Over the years, SIPI's scope expanded beyond just image processing to involve a broader range of signal processing applications, including audio signal processing, speech processing, video processing, and the processing of data from a variety of sensors, imaging systems, and other information sources[2][3][5].

In 1977, SIPI released the first version of the USC-SIPI image database[6]. The database provides a large collection of standard test images that were scanned and digitized using SIPI's image acquisition hardware. Many of these images have been influential in image processing research, including the widely-used Mandrill/Baboon, Peppers, and Lena test images[2][3][5].
