Fitzpatrick Referrals is a specialist veterinary referral centre located in Eashing, Surrey, England. Founded in 2005 by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, the facility is renowned for its advanced orthopaedic and neurosurgical treatments for companion animals.[1][2] The practice has gained international recognition through its association with the television series The Supervet.[1]
History
[edit]Founding and Early Development
[edit]Fitzpatrick Referrals was established in 2005 by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, a veterinary surgeon specializing in orthopaedics and neurosurgery. The original practice was based in Tilford, Surrey, where an MRI truck would visit fortnightly to scan patients.[1] In 2005, Fitzpatrick acquired a rundown farm in Eashing, Surrey, and began transforming it into a state-of-the-art specialist centre for companion animals. The new facility was completed in 2008 and officially opened by HRH Duke of Kent in 2009.[1][2]
Expansion and Technological Advancements
[edit]In 2011, Fitzpatrick Referrals upgraded its wards to include bacterial-resistant wipe-down wall coverings, underground heating, and air conditioning optimized for HEPA to minimize infection risks. The reinforced glass doors, rather than gates or bars, permit a wide field of view for the animals, allowing them to feel as much at home as possible.[1]
Oncology and Soft Tissue Division
[edit]In 2015, Fitzpatrick Referrals expanded its services by opening a dedicated Oncology and Soft Tissue Centre on the University of Surrey’s Research Park in Guildford, Surrey.[3][4] This specialised facility was designed to provide advanced cancer treatments and soft tissue surgeries for companion animals, equipped with a 160-slice CT scanner and dedicated chemotherapy suites. The centre was officially opened in September 2015 by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick and BBC presenter Chris Evans.[3][4]
In August 2022, the clinical team leading the Oncology and Soft Tissue Centre completed a management buyout, transitioning the facility into an independent entity known as AURA Veterinary. The buyout was led by Professor Nick Bacon, Dr. Laurent Findji, Dr. Jonathan Bray, and Dr. Gerard McLauchlan, all of whom had played key roles in the hospital’s development. Supported by external investors, the team rebranded the hospital to AURA Veterinary.[5]
Fitzpatrick Institute for the Restoration of Skeletal Tissue (FIRST)
[edit]In 2018, the practice expanded further with the establishment of the Fitzpatrick Institute for the Restoration of Skeletal Tissue (FIRST), dedicated to regenerative medicine and providing additional options for families with pets affected by osteoarthritis.[1][6]
Media Appearances
[edit]Fitzpatrick Referrals gained widespread recognition through several television programmes:
- The Bionic Vet (2010)
- The Supervet (2014–present)
