"Me & U" is a song by American singer Cassie from her self-titled debut studio album.
Background
In 2005, producer Ryan Leslie met Cassie at New York's Marquee and took her on as a casual music project.[1] According to Cassie, "Me & U" was a demo they did in April 2005 while "having fun in the studio".[2] Leslie recorded and produced the song himself with keyboards and a Mac in the living room of his apartment in Harlem.[1]
Composition
The Washington Post describes Cassie vocals as "Janet-Jackson-after-20-flights-of-stairs thin".
Release and promotion
A campaign on the social networking service Myspace was developed by Leslie to promote "Me & U". It involved Cassie providing fans with a daily behind-the-scenes look at her life. In November 2005, "Me & U" was shared on the platform and within three weeks 60,000 users had made it their Myspace background music. The song became a viral phenomenon, reaching an audience of 10 million prior to its promotion and distribution deal with Atlantic and Bad Boy Records.
