History
Dead history typeface was invented by P. Scott. Makela in 1990 during a time when digital tools became a standard for designers.
After several revisions, the design was licensed to Emigre Fonts in 1994, where it was redrawn and finalized by Zuzana Licko.
Characteristics
Dead History is a blend of two contrasting font styles: modern sans-serif and classic serif. Makela merged together elements of the clean, geometric font VAG Rounded and Didot, a typeface with elegant and high contrast strokes. Together they create a typeface that combines the precise look of sans-serif and the elegant style of serif.
Impact
Dead History expresses postmodernism typography, shifting from the idea of clear and simple to expressive and intense forms. This allows readers to explore type not just as a way of communication but also as a visual experience. Dead history aided in paving the way for other dual typefaces and more creative approaches to the design of type.
