Regarding "The PI code allows the radio to display the name of the radio station - for example BBC Radio 1."

This is simple not true, if "BBC Radio 1" is displayed in your radio it is because the PSN has that particular text string. PI code is just a value that your radio will not understand more than it is an (hopefully) unique identifier, e.g. when doing AF switching it will make sure the new station has the same PI code.
