Reinstating a deleted page

An article / wiki page on Sarala Roy was recently removed due to a citation issue. How can I find that article, fix the citation, and put it back in? Please help, thank you. Chetanroy (talk) 05:23, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Sarala Roy wasn't removed for a "citation issue" it was removed as a copyright violation. We could only restore it if we receive permission from the copyright holder via VRT. Anyone is allowed to write a new version though. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:06, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Chetanroy, deleted pages containing significant copyright violations cannot be restored for legal reasons. Wikipedia takes copyright much more seriously than many other websites because our licensing allows for free re-use of all of our text content, as long as attribution is given. That means that Wikipedia must be very strict when copyright violations are involved. Cullen328 (talk) 07:10, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Two people with the same name

Hello - I would like to create a page for a person who has the same name as someone already listed on Wiki. One is an actor and is not on Wiki. The other is a hockey player by the same name. Hi Griff3161! I recently encountered this problem when making the article Francis Bourgeois (trainspotter), my suggestion would be to name the page "(person's name) (actor)", then monitor the pageviews of both pages for a while, and then the actor's page could be renamed and made the primary topic, or the person's name (without the "actor") could be turned into a disambiguation page if that makes sense? wizzito | say hello! 17:08, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

The one suggestion I would have is to place your question in the larger edit window, not the smaller section header window. It doesn't seem fair

A friend of mine wrote a page about me, but it has a warning for lack of notability. Are there volunteers who can help fix this? I've done a TEDMED talk, written four books and hundreds of articles. Had a segment about me on NPR's This American Life, and much much more, but I'm not notable??? I'm particularly puzzled because there are many people who seem less notable than I, who have pages without warnings -- for example, half my lawyer friends. I'm a lawyer with a Ph.D. in medical ethics -- the first to do a joint program with that combination that I know of and the first Westerner to go to Iran to study their organ selling programs extensively (extensively meaning hundred's of interviews, one anthropologist had done one day of interviews at one hospital). Why do I not qualify -- If the friend who wrote the page for me made mistakes, why doesn't someone help fix them, instead of making me seem like a self-promoting fraud with the warning boxes? Integrity1010 (talk) 19:46, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

I'm afraid our Notability criteria for people demands to know, not what a person has done in their life, but what others have written about them. This was tagged in Dec 2019, and had had dozens of edits since then. Perhaps Wikignome Wintergreen, a recent editor of the article will consider removing the tag. Neither you nor your friend should remove it (nor edit the article anymore). The article has been criticized for weak referencing and possibly not reaching the bar for notability. I assume the notability standard here is WP:NACADEMIC, but I'm far from an expert in the notability area, and academics seem particularly tricky. I'll leave that decision to someone else, but I'll fix up the article in other ways. Wikignome Wintergreen^talk 20:34, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

I've taken a quick look through the article and at some of the citations. I recognise that the article is currently being worked on, but my feeling is that the page comes over as an amazingly impressive CV of a person who has done some wonderful work on her field. I don't see sources that talk about her, as we would expect from independent sources to meet WP:NBIO. The past professorial position itself doesn't quite meet Criterion 5 of WP:NPROF on its own, yet I suspect the body of work she has produced in that and in subsequent roles could be deemed to have had a significant impact under criteria 1 or 7. But as this isn't an WP:AFD discussion, I don't need to go into more detail at this stage, though such a discussion would need further search for independent sources and could be borderline, despite her achievements. That said, I'd not be pushing for such a discussion, and would expect a fair bit of effort to go into WP:BEFORE. I think the notability template was not hugely unreasonable, and hopefully current efforts will help. Nick Moyes (talk) 22:33, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

"Borderline notable" - the hardest case to deal with. Basically, Integrity1010, it's hard to make a decision here without doing some significant research, and since we're all volunteers, there's no way to force anyone to do that research. As it stands, the article doesn't contain any good (by our standards) sources which prove beyond doubt that you're notable (by our standards), so the tag - for the moment - remains. If you think you have such sources, the best place for them is probably the article's talk page, Talk:Sigrid Fry-Revere, since this post on the Teahouse will get archived eventually. Not sure if I'm doing this right, putting my responses here. Yes, I'm Sigrid Fry-Revere. I'm also the first person to create a living organ donor advocacy group which was not run by organ recipients as a hidden way to get more people to become organ donors. My organization -- The American Living Organ Donor Fund actually advocated for living organ donors without any conflict of interest --- we didn't find donors for organ recipients. We helped living organ donors with information and helped them with expenses and lost wages -- something which at the time some people thought was illegal but now is part of the federally funded NLDAC program and many state and private programs as well. How many firsts does a person have to have to qualify as notable? Isn't the fact that I'm cited or quoted on Academia.com at least a few times a week and sometimes several times in a day worth something -- I'm part of a very important conversation -- so much so that people find it necessary to answer what I've written -- not the least of which is the research I did in Iran -- which by the way was accepted as part of the National Library of Medicine's permanent collection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Integrity1010 (talk • contribs) 21:26, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

The most important thing to note is that Wikipedia has a peculiar and specific conception of what notability means. It essentially means that you have "received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject." Somewhat different and more specific criteria apply for academics, but that is the basic principle - not having many firsts or doing important work. Zoozaz1 (talk) 01:31, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

So looking at just the first 7 pages of 148,000 entries for my name on Google, I found the following secondary sources. None of these are articles by me, nor are they simply citations or quotes. They are all more extensive discussions of my work and / or my life. I'm sure I could find at least another dozen more.

That search, that came up with 148,000 was "Sigrid Fry-Revere newspapers" -- because I was looking for articles about me. When I just search "Sigrid Revere" -- I get over a million hits.

Integrity1010 have you read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing? If an article about you is published it won't belong to you or to the friend who wrote it. Anyone with Internet access can find both flattering and unflattering references to you and edit the article. If you are determined to obtain your own Wikipedia article that will likely happen, but if you later decide you are not happy with changes in the article you will not be able to have it deleted.

Please remember that, with the exception of a few paid editors (who are not paid by Wikipedia), most of the people connected with Wikipedia are volunteers who work in their spare time, and choose projects that interest them. If you provide all 148,000 entries on Google that does not mean that anyone will be obligated to improve the draft article about yourself.

COI/CITESPAM - delete, tag or revise?

What do we do about an editor's work that was done predominantly to WP:CITESPAM: "citation spamming include academics and scientists using their editing privileges primarily to add citations to their own work". The editor was recently blocked for sockpuppetry. The user knew full well that they weren't supposed to cite themselves, deliberately obscuring their authorship on many of the citations by omitting to mention any author, or hiding their co-authorship by mentioning only the primary author or listing themselves as "and colleagues". They have created hundreds of articles based on their own professional work (citing dozens of their own works, and their colleagues' works, in each) and it's practically impossible to extract their CITESPAM without just torching the whole article. (One example, Addilal.) In other cases, they CITESPAMed within hundreds of other articles (which they didn't create) to add citations to their own work for minor inclusions (like their book mentioned different animal species, so they added their book to each animal's article). (One example, [1]) The latter scenario is easier to solve (remove their inserted CITESPAM), but the former scenario is a more complicated issue. I'm trying to clean up the mess, but not seeking to 'erase' everything. I need some guidance for a balanced approach. Most policies about removing edits refer to banned editors making edits after their ban. I haven't found any guidelines covering this scenario. Platonk (talk) 10:12, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Platonk: I haven't looked into the specific case you are concerned with but WP:SELFCITE has some guidance along the lines that quoting one's own (academic) work is allowed within reason so context is important. @Michael D. Turnbull: Like you said, you did NOT look into this case. This user didn't do any of his refspamming "within reason". He engaged for about 2 years to almost exclusively write articles on his field of research. There was no attempt to further improve the encyclopedia. Not everything he added was useless, hence I don't wish to delete everything. But I need another pair of eyes and opinion on what to do with some of this stuff. Follow-up to Fuad Hamza page

Hi,

I came across the page of Fuad Hamza, and am trying to correct erroneous information about him. It is written there that Fuad Hamza was from Palestine, and the proof presented for this was from a single source, a PhD by one student who had it wrong in there. There is also a reference that he may be a Druze from Syria -- it is also wrong. Fuad Hamza is a famous personality in Lebanon's history, and hails from the village of Aabay in Lebanon.

Perm request

Hello! A bit of an odd question. I have an alt account called Blaze Fire Wolf (publicly disclosed on my userpage), and on the userpage of the alt I have stated that I'll only use it for a various number of reasons, one of those being an edit to an article I'd rather not have connected to my main account. Actually, right now, the archival template uses the magic code algo = old(48h), so it is actually two days. Hello, Itcouldbepossible. There are a very large number of redlinks in this article, which may lead experienced editors to ask "what the heck is going on here"? Trim them way back. This biography of a living person has only a single reference, whose reliability I cannot fully evaluate because I am not fluent in Spanish. I do, however, know that the expectation is that there will be multiple references to reliable, independent sources devoting significant coverage to a person before an article like this can be considered a acceptable. So, trim the redlinks and improve the references. Translations are welcomed but it is your responsibility as a translator to ensure that your translation complies with the same policies and guidelines thst all other articles are expected to comply with. Also, you shouldn't just dump google translations on here. Machine translations are often unreliable and in this case the sentences don't even read correctly. If you don't know the other language to verify the content and make the necessary modifications, you shouldn't do it. —SpacemanSpiff 05:47, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Itcouldbepossible. The fact that the es-wiki article is under-referenced is a problem for es-wiki. We too have thousands and thousands and thousands of articles which are seriously substandard, and would not be acceptable today; but few people are interested in spending the time to improve or delete them, so they remain. We do not now accept new articles into English Wikipedia unless they meet our current standards, irrespective of whether they are entirely new or a translation. --ColinFine (talk) 09:54, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

@Itcouldbepossible: the thing to do is to look at the original article and its subject, and decide if it looks genuinely notable. If so, hunt out some sources. It's not a waste of work, but you need to make sure that the translation is a genuinely good article, in good writing, with good sources, and not just a google-translate of an article that was probably inadequate in the Spanish WP. Someone wise here advised me that translations don't have to be exact. You can use as much or as little of the other WP article as you want (though of course follow the instructions on translation and credit it!) - so if you can find some sources that back up part of what the Spanish article says, while other bits look wobbly, just translate and use the good stuff. Your attempt at translating a Spanish article wasn't a waste of time if you learned from it. I've been a Wikipedia editor since 2007 and I'm still learning. Itcouldbepossible I don't know what equipment you're using (computer, electronic tablet, cell phone), but I am using an outdated Mac laptop, and this is how things work for me. A few minutes ago I clicked on the Wikipedia Adventure link. When that link came up, I went to the bottom of the page and clicked on Mission 1. A white box came up, I read what's in the box, then clicked on the blue box titled "Get Equipment for the trip". That brought up another white box. I read that box, and clicked on the new blue box titled "Come with me..."

Since I've already gone through The Wikipedia Adventure I didn't go any further tonight. There will be different projects to try, such as editing and adding citations. I believe when I finished Mission 1 I went back to the beginning page, and then clicked on Mission 2. I read white boxes, and clicked on blue boxes, just as I did for the first mission. Did you click on Mission 1? If so, what happened when you did? Perhaps if you are having some difficulty with the English language you may not be understanding all of the instructions written in the white boxes. How to get Modern Skin back?

I was editing my Preferences and when clicking Preview to see what the other skins looked like, I didn't realize that it selected the skin I previewed, so when I scrolled down to change other preferences in Appearance, I clicked Save and now Modern isn't on the list of Skins anymore. I've been using this skin since 2010, maybe earlier, and it's the easiest on my eyes. How do I get it back?

@Schizowallflower: I'm afraid you've lost it for good – only four skins are maintained (to make life easier for developers) and Modern has been deprecated. Try out the current skins to see if any of them work well for you, and see the discussion at § 'Modern' not selectable any longer for background. @Shushugah: there are two versions of Vector available – the old ("legacy") one and the current/new one. Changing an Article Title

Title change request

Hi there, currently I am working on the article stub entitled 'Australian Aboriginal Progress Association' and I came across a problem. After doing some research I noticed that the title of the organisation is actually 'Australian Aboriginal Progressive Association', rather than 'progress'. Could you confirm or deny this by any chance? Hi Bwal6418. The best place to discuss such a thing is probably going to be a Talk:Australian Aboriginal Progress Association because that's where you're likely to find editors who might be familiar with the subject matter. Basically, if the title is incorrect, then the page can be WP:MOVEd to a new title; however, it's probably a good idea to at least discuss things first on the article talk page before trying to move the page yourself. You're also going to be expected to "prove" the page needs to be moved by providing links to reliable sources supporting the change. If nobody responds to your post on the article's talk page after a few days, try posting a Template:Please see at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of Australia to see if you can find someone there to help sort this out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:14, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Danstronger, I've made the div 5em wide which should hopefully fit most browsers – if I make it narrower, there's a high risk that one of the words will overrun the box if a user uses a wide font such as Verdana. @Tigraan: it's not an infobox, but uses the infobox class as that floats things to the right, provides adequate whitespace and reduces font size. I tried to emulate right-aligned image thumbnails. Transcluding rather than substituting it reduces maintenance and keeps all copies in sync when the template changes. Oriental Goldbulb Rather like driving a car, it's best to set off slowly because Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia controlled by quite a lot of 'rules of the road'. Providing you don't simply add "stuff that you happen to know", you might find looking at articles in or around your home town or favourite place might be worthy doing first. You'll get a feeling of how articles have been written, perhaps spotting typos or other small fixes which you can correct. Making sure the written English flows easily and is gramatically correct is almost as important as goof, factual content. You might find certain statement have written after them, which means we need to find a Reliable Source to insert to support that statement. In time, you might feel confident to add one via the 'Cite' button. You could visit Help:Introduction for further guidance, or come back here if you hit problems. Because it's easy to make mistakes, you might feel other road users appear abrupt with you if you do mess up. But rather than bite back, take a moment to work out what you might have done wrong and keep on the correct side of the road to avoid confrontation. We work by collaboration and consensus, so engaging with other editors is quite normal - as is following what other users advise you to do. However, you can upload images there, or you can click "Upload File" on the left side (in contributions.) Thenafter, you can be successful or not, depending on the file you upload. Hi Hgh1985. You can find out more at Wikimedia Commons, but basically it's like a big worldwide photo album where people can upload images that they want to share with others. Not everything is OK to upload to Commons, but generally anything that complies with c:Commons:Licensing and c:Commons:Project scope is OK. Wikimedia Commons is a global project which means the files it hosts can be rather easily used by all Wikimedia Foundation projects (not just English Wikipedia). Such content can also be used outside the various Wikimedia projects as long as the c:Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia is complied with. For this reason, many of the images and other media files you see used on English Wikipedia are uploaded to Commons, but not all of them. Grounds for creating a new page for a historical figure

Hi Teahouse gang,

I'd like to create a brand new page for a fairly busy property speculator I've come across from 18th Century Dublin (Tristram Fortick). I have tonnes of documentation to back it up and fill it out, I just wonder what are the grounds for creating a new page. He wasn't famous, but a road in Dublin used to be named after him before it got renamed to something else (Fortick's Lane to Clonliffe Road). I think he was quite important at the time, but nothing has been written about him extensively. I think he would be a great case study for erstwhile property developers in Dublin at that time. I also have a document with his original signature on it and would love to create one of those .svg files from it. Anyone know how to make them?

Frankysandwich2, tonnes of documentation suggests primary sources, which won't be usable. Do you also have kilogrammes of published material? If published material about him doesn't exist, then he sounds like splendid material for a doctoral dissertation. In revised form, this might be taken up by a university press; and the book, its reviews, etc, would eventually be fodder for a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia is not the place for original research, however painstaking, and about however remarkable a subject. -- Hoary (talk) 23:51, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Frankysandwich2 you will need to have published sources for references, but they are available. (Though I don't know if there's enough to write an entire article.) I copied Tristram Fortick's name, pasted it into Google Books, and got lots of books that have something about him in them. Choose one of the books about Dublin, Parliament, etc., and below the little snippet quote from the book (with the page number) most have a "button" labeled either Read or Preview. Click that "button" to bring up a page to read, and to take notes from. To the right of the Read or Preview "button" is a More Editions "button". Click on that to get the name of the book publisher, and the publication date. To help you cite those references properly you can read Citing sources. Checking to see if an editor has edited a page in its history

I regularly patrol the "Recent changes" page for vandalism. Sometimes I notice an editor that might not be a vandal all the time, but just from time to time. I'd like to see if there is a way to check for one particular editor's edits on an article. @Th78blue Yes, that’s easy to find. At an article’s View History tab, there’s a link at the top of page to “Find Edits by this User”. Simply paste in their username, and you get a result like this. Alternatively, choose to display the last 500 edits and do a text search for their name with Ctrl-F. can't seem to reset my password

I'm a regular donator to wikimedia, and I'd really like to be logged in so I don't get the reminder banner to donate - I already do each month, but when I try to get a password reset email, I get nothing. There have been issues with password reset emails going out, but I should note that the email used to set up a donation and the email associated with your account aren't tracked on the same systems. Two things: You still haven't complied with the mandatory requirement to disclose your paid status. You need to do that before you make any other edits. Problems when referring to another Wiki page in this format ... when editing

Hello...

I have been having problems editing a Wiki page in the normal way [[....]] in source editing so that when clicking the highlighted name (in blue), it will lead to the quoted Wiki page.

The edited term instead appears in red.. indicating the page is not yet created/available. However, when I search the term, the page is already there.

Please assist.

Hello, Volten0001, and welcome to the Teahouse. You haven't told us which article you are trying to link to, but the usual reason for this is that the case of the letters does not match. The case must match exactly, except for the first letter. Also, any accents, punctuation, spaces etc must match. If you still can't see the problem, copy and post the exact string you are putting between the brackets here and we can look. India article

I saw articles about USA, England and Australia have sub-section for Education and Sports but this India article doesn't have. I suggest to create seperate sub-sections for this. @Newton Euro: welcome to the Teahouse. The article India does actually have these sub-sections: India#Education and India#Sports and recreation, both of them sub-sections of India#Culture. In the article about Australia, the sub-section Australia#Education is under Australia#Demographics, while Australia#Sport and recreation can be found under Australia#Culture. USA has the same structure as the article about Australia, with education under demographics, and sports under culture, but England has a different structure again, with education and sports as separate sections that are not under culture, nor under demographics. I don't know why the structure of these articles are different, but the sub-sections are there in each of them.

Long standing citation requests

While reading Wikipedia articles I often come across long standing citation requests and other template warnings. For example, on the Sheffield Steelers page some of the citation needed requests date back to 2007 and the recentism template was placed there in 2009. The article is being updated but 'warnings' ignored. Surely such longstanding 'requests for action' reflect badly on Wikipedia. I have little interest in the subject matter and so wouldn't want to spend time trying to find sources to validate these passages. The talk page looks moribund so I think things are unlikely to be resolved by commenting and seeking a consensus there. The choice for me is to ignore and move on or delete the 'offending' lines and remove the citation needed warning. What are people's views here? Rupples (talk) 15:11, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Per WP:V "Any material lacking an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports the material may be removed and should not be restored without an inline citation to a reliable source". Not enough sources?

A writer friend of mine recently attempted to start a Wiki article about me. I am a musician and although I am mentioned in other people’s pages, there is no entry for me personally. There are a number of stories and interviews in newspapers about me (both physical and virtual ones), plus of course anything can be verified by checking websites of artists, album liner notes, or seeing me perform with various famous people on YouTube etc etc. Seems to be fairly easily verifiable stuff, yet he got the message that “there were not enough verifiable sources “. He added a few more (does Wiki accept its OWN pages as verifiable sources?) and then got a message that maybe it’s “under review” or something to that effect. So it has been neither accepted nor rejected at this point. Not sure what to do from here. Appreciate anyone that can shed some light on this or suggest what to do now. Just wait? Or have yet another person that knows me write another article? I saw other people being asked what their name is on here so maybe I should put my name. It’s Jay Collins. Hello, Jaybird1968, and welcome to the Teahouse. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia (rather than social media, or a business directory) we require that articles be almost entirely based on what has been published in reliable sources unconnected with the subject. This means that in order for an article about you to be possible, several people, wholly unconnected with you and not fed information by or on behalf of you, must have chosen to write at some length about you and been published in places with a reputation for fact-checking and editorial control. This means that nothing published by you or your associates, nothing in user-generated sources such as blogs, social media, or wikis (including Wikipedia!) and nothing primarily based on your words - interviews or press releases - can contribute to this. Most artists, even professional ones, do not meet these criteria, and we therefore do not have articles about them, even if they are mentioned in other articles. (I am mentioned in an article, because I once did something remarkable, but not enough has been written about me to ground an article about me). If you or your friend can find sources to establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability (essentially what I explained above) then there can be an article about you. Your friend is discouraged from writing it, because of their conflict of interest, and also because writing an article is a very challenging task for a new Wikipedia editor (even if they have experience as a writer) and I always advise spending a few months learning the trade by editing existing articles first. Can I upload photos without it going to Wikipedia commons

I want to upload a photo with a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license but in order to upload to Wikipedia it has to go to Wikipedia commons, is there a way for it to not go to Wikipedia Commons? Hi Maomaoox The CC BY-NC licence is not acceptable on Wikipedia, it has to be CC BY-SA. The Sealifebase source looks good, you can also try the IUCN website. A Google Scholar search could also be productive. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:45, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Page doesn't exist?

Hello, about 5 months ago I wrote a Wikipedia article on Joanna Langfield, who is a well known movie critic having been on the radio for nearly 40 years now. She's also my mother. Unfortunately the article still has not been published and am not sure why.

Whenever I click on the link through my account, it says the page does not exist.

I admitted the conflict of interest, I'm obviously doing this for free and made sure everything was linked and uploaded pictures to show that everything that was written is true.

Is there anything more I can do to make sure the page gets published?

De-orphaning a Wikipedia page by linking to another page

I am trying to de-orphan Wikipedia page Walter Boardman Kerr by linking it to another Wikipedia page, Philips Academy, where WBK is listed by name on a list of notable alumni. See above, Trail972 - the template has already been removed by someone who read your post here. If you have a photo for the page that is appropriately licensed, it will need to be uploaded either to Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons. It will then be assigned a filename, etc. Commons is the preferred place for a number of reasons, but they can't host non-free files. What is the copyright status of the image you want to use? There's already a picture in the article, but I see that it's been nominated for deletion on Commons because there are doubts about its copyright status; I don't know what the outcome will be. Copyright is a very serious issue around here, and in the absence of good evidence to the contrary, our default assumption is that a work is indeed under copyright. Hello can anyone help me with my page on the butterfly animal. It’s an extinct arthropod from Silurian Waukesha. Yes, Prodjex, those would come under WP:SELFPUBLISH as Shushugah said, so you could cite them but only for the limited kinds of information explained there. This is assuming that the podcast was by the speaker or somebody associated with them. I often go to other projects chasing LTA socks, and it's quite a pain that I have to enable popups on all those wikis. I once tried adding the following to m:Special:MyPage/global.js but it didn't work.

I am writing my first submission

...and have had my article reviewed by Ivork. I would like to know how to cite sources. Much of the information contained in the submission is verifiable and can be attributed to newspaper articles of press releases. I agree with Nick, Rush Owen, and I would further point out that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost exclusively interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. For almost every single statement in your draft you need to ask, Where has somebody unconnected with Hatch published this information? If the answer is "nowhere", then it doesn't belong in any Wikipedia article. The exceptions are uncontroversial factual information like dates and places, where self-published sources connected with Hatch are acceptable. But no information should be in the article unless it has been published somewhere.

My suggestion (which I regularly give to new editors who attempt the very difficult task of creating a new article) would be to put Hatch aside for a few months while you "learn the trade" of editing Wikipedia, and how articles are shaped, by improving some of our six million existing articles. --ColinFine (talk) 22:47, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Expand the article use of non-free image

@Jéské Couriano: in a similar fashion as the literature section [[5]], i would like to create a music section with different Amharic musicians of different era's, i would like to keep it balanced 50/50 men/women ratio and preferably with more established female names, as you can see here i have some difficulties here, one is not very notable and another is average. I have considered uploading non-free images of prominent deceased performers Asnaketch Worku & Bizunesh Bekele, but if i can't use it for the purpose of the music section(Amharic music), then i might upload it at a later for their own articles. Accessing the visual editor

John Keller, the visual editor is indeed simpler -- until you realize that no it isn't. I recommend that you try again to edit the "source" (or "Wikitext"). Using it to create tables is a pain. For anything else, it's easy. Hit your Enter key twice in order to start a new paragraph. Never start a new line with one or more spaces. Two apostrophes immediately before and immediately after anything that should be italicized. Two equals signs immediately before and immediately after a heading of highest importance (such as "Accessing the visual editor", above), three of them for a heading of less importance (such as "Just say no", above). Doubled square brackets around a link. Oh, and references. These are of supreme importance, but I suggest that you spend a little time reworking existing prose, and only then add new material, of course with references. That's about it. I, too, endorse the use of the source editor. It is criticized as being old fashioned and difficult to use. Yes, it is old but old is not necessarily bad. Although I have been using personal computers since the late 1970s, I have never been a professional programmer. I am a "learn as I go" guy and I had no problem learning wikitext or wikicode or whatever you want to call it. @John Keller Are you aware that you can set your own individual Preferences for which of the two editing tools you are offered? Use the Preferences link at the very top of the page. In the 'Editing' tab look for 'Editing mode' and select Show me both editor tabs from the dropdown option box, then hit Save at the bottom of the page. Hello, Spotanus. There are several possible techniques. I do not use semi-automated tools because I want to give careful human thought to every one of my edits. The one that I use most commonly is to look at "View history" tab on the article. Find the last proper version before improper edits and click on the date and time. This should bring up the version that you want to restore. Check it out and if it is OK, save it with an edit summary like "Restore to version before (vandalism) (disruptive editing) (copyright violation)" or whatever is most accurate. Lil Moon Teddy, you may only upload freely licensed works. And when using existing freely licensed works, you have to respect the license terms which typically require attribution and sometimes to release your derivative work using the same license.

I don't know where the character from File:Drawing UwU.png comes from but https://www.deviantart.com/freypagani/art/Three-Fixes-cartoons-in-reality-891396671 features the same background so I doubt you created it. This is considered a copyright violation as there is no evidence that the elements are freely licensed.

Is the citation bot working properly and as often as it should be? Why doesn't it automatically convert bare links (Special:Diff/1052671329) into the sophisticated coding language of Wiki? Outline of chocolate - is this really a style of article we have?

I came across the article Outline of chocolate, and it struck me as kind of odd. I've been editing for a few years, but this is a style of article I've never come across - it's almost a list, but it isn't, and it's not a general overview of chocolate like you'd expect from the, well, chocolate article. One of the headers is just a question, which I don't think is in the manual of style.

I'm familiar with generic overviews that then link off to more detailed articles - Japanese clothing is one. I suppose it's just an article titled "Outline of ___" that's stumped me.

We have loads of "Outline of..." articles. There was a handful of editors who liked doing them, led by User:The Transhumanist, who did most of this one. This is typical in getting very few views, av. 17 per day. I've never found them any use myself, & I think production of new ones has now largely stopped, but arguably they do little harm. But I suppose these things are a matter of taste; I personally don't find categories useful, but a lot of people adore them. I actually just fixed it – there is no article about the banking executive, so I changed the wikilink to point to the not-yet-existing article Peter Moses (bank manager). Yes, that looks to be the case, Maomaoox. Do you know about a tool called Earwig's Copyvio Detector? You can use it to compare your source(s) (if freely available online) with the draft you've written to see where the similarities are, and then work on reducing them. The reference qualifications could be different, or you may find volunteers able to help improve the article. Wikipedia volunteers work on articles that interest them, and I suspect it may be difficult to find someone willing to do volunteer labor for an actor they are not familiar with. Ryebreadforscale, you puzzle me. (And perhaps the lack of other responses suggests that you puzzle other people here too.) You changed the image from one cropped version to another cropped version of a photo in the public domain. (Both, and many other images, are in this category.) Neither is, or as far as I understand ever was, a "generic image of the coronavirus". Instead, both show what appears to be an actual vial of the stuff. (Are you suggesting that it's instead a mock-up of some kind?) The picture of the vial is indeed "made available under the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark 1.0", in other words, explicitly donated to the public domain. If we ignore a few factors (notably personality rights) that clearly are irrelevant in this case, Wikimedia/Wikipedia can do what it likes with images that are in the public domain. -- Hoary (talk) 23:10, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

You'vegotmail27 a mentor is an experienced person willing to voluntarily help out a less experienced person. If you know the basics of writing in the English language, and are willing to read some how-to articles you shouldn't need a mentor. (Did you ever write book reports or compositions in high school? If so, you should know how to write.) Start out by reading Wikipedia articles that interest you, and make small edits on them, by adding needed references, or rewriting confusing sections. After you've gained some experience you can read Your first article and decide to take on the hard task of creating a well-researched neutral article. Make sure you only add information that you have a reference for (no "Someone once told me this" additions) and don't cut and past paragraphs from online sources. Rewrite the data using your own words to keep from violating copywriter laws. If you run into problems come back to the Teahouse and ask another question. Best wishes on your Wikipedia adventures.
