Wikipedia:WikiVault

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WikiVault is a GenAI-assisted Wikipedia editing tool that has been deployed on the Korean Wikipedia since May 2025. It was developted by Korean Wikipedian Ted Yoo, one of the project's participants, with the support from the Korean WikiMedia Association.

The tool provides two main functions:

  • Translation – translating English articles into Korean
  • Article drafting – generating initial article drafts from user prompts

More details about the tool's functionality can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea/WikiVault.

Since its deployment, there have been active community discussions within the Korean Wikipedia about the use of WikiVault - ranging from policy considerations to values and concerns around AI-assisted editing. Across many language editions of Wikipedia, communities are also exploring how to thoughtfully integrate GenAI tools into their workflows. The Korean experience with WikiVault can provide a valuable opportunity to learn from a real-world deployment and contribute data-driven, community-centered insights to these broader conversations.

Goals

[edit]

meta:Research:The Impact of WikiVault on Korean Wikipedia was created to systematically understand the impact of the WikiVault tool on the Korean Wikipedia - combining community perspectives with analysis of editing data and behavioral patterns - as well as to:

  1. Support the Korean Wikipedia community in shaping policies and improving the design of WikiVault in line with community values.
  2. Share lessons learned and insights with other Wikipedia communities exploring the adoption of GenAI-assisted editing tools.

Scope

[edit]

The research project combines data analysis, community observation, and qualitative inquiry to understand the evolving relationship between human editors, AI tools, and the shared norms of collaborative knowledge creation. It aims to explore the multi-dimensional impact of the WikiVault tool on the Korean Wikipedia (KoWiki), focusing on three key aspects: content, editors, and the community.

Content

[edit]
  • How does WikiVault affect the quality, depth, and sourcing of Wikipedia articles?
  • Has the introduction of WikiVault led to more translation-based activity, and correspondingly fewer original content additions?
  • Do pages created or edited through WikiVault show different topic or category distributions compared to other edits?

Editors

[edit]
  • Are edits assisted by WikiVault more likely to be reverted (e.g., tagged with mw-reverted or mw-rollback) than other edits?
  • Are new users who start editing through WikiVault more likely to continue editing over time?
  • How does WikiVault affect editors' motivations and perceived autonomy?
  • How do different editor groups — newcomers, experienced users, patrollers — experience or perceive WikiVault's assistance?

Community

[edit]
  • How does the community respond to WikiVault edits in discussions, policies, and norms?
  • What values do Korean Wikipedia contributors see as most important in editing, and how do they think WikiVault aligns with or challenges those values?
  • How do editors perceive the quality and trustworthiness of WikiVault-assisted content?
  • Has participation in WikiVault-related discussions contributed to or hindered editors' sense of belonging within the Korean Wikipedia community?
