On this WikiProject Stub sorting subpage, you can propose new stub types (please read the procedures beforehand!), as well as the reorganization and subdivision of existing stub types. You can also discuss anything else related to stubs on the talk page.

Proposing new stub types – procedure

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub ARTICLE you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub TEMPLATES and CATEGORIES; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check the List of stub types or under Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. You may use this tool to scan through categories; tagged stubs are always in Category:All stub articles and transclude {{asbox}}. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. If you use any category scan (from the tool mentioned above or from any other), please link to it so that other users can confirm that the results are still accurate.
  5. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  6. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and/or template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  7. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed. Some times, it may be difficult to be sure how many stubs would get a tag - in which case you can also start with an upmerged stub tag until you're sure there are enough.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion is the correct page for proposals to delete a stub type.

^ Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

"Speedy creation"

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope.

List speedy creation proposals in the same proposal listings as normal stub proposals below.

1910s drama film stubs is huge. Painting stubs

We have a split of painting stubs by century, some of these have already been split by decade, given the 17th and 16th century categories are over 600 I propose we atleast create the by decade templates for these, with categories for those that pass the 60 mark, as this would leave the 18th century still by century I propose we do the same for that category as well. So I propose the following for each decade of the three centuries:

Comfortably in the mid 600 article range and badly categorised by the looks of things. I propose a split of the documentaries and movve them up a level as they are not categorized this way in the perm cats so:

Iowa buildings

Extremely large category, too many counties to do all of them, I propose the following counties which appear to have enough articles for a category:

Oaxaca municipality geography stubs

Not sure how to break this up, but apparently 459 out of the 513 articles in Oaxaca geography stubs are in Municipalities of Oaxaca, so I suggest making {{Oaxaca-municipality-stub}} and its own subcat - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 20:06, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not to keen on this,I think this would be a bit like having a category for all the towns/villages in California. I think if we do split this it should be by region or district, which does seem to be in most of the articles I looked at but not in the categories so would require a hand sort. A couple of countries in Africa have a ouest province so I would probably want the template disambigd, Sud is the IOC code for Sudan so again a disambig might be worth while. I think a couple of the others have disambig pages for the articles but for very small places that we can get away with, but maybe disambig the remaining compass points as well just in case. More New Brunswick geography stubs

I propose splitting up {{NewBrunswick-geo-stub}} into sub-templates (including the one I already mentioned) based on the county:

I Support the idea of the split, however I strongly feel it might be an idea to disambig all the templates with NB as a lot of those county names seem familier from US counties, other Canadaian states and even UK and Ireland counties for example the disabiguation page Northumberland County, as in the county proposal below, exists in New South Wales, Ontario, England, Virginia and Pennsylvania besides here in New Brunswick. Disambigd Gangwon as this historical province is now split between the North and South with both retaining the same name in Korean but being transliterated differently into the Roman alphabet. I have followed the perm cats in the categorization of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation MLA's I presume ther has been a joining together or rename or something. Per the Belgian and French split we have tended to go with US-cycling-bio-[date]-stub rather than having the date first. Also on the other cycling bios we have split categories by century first so are you proposing an American cycling biography, 20th-century birth stubs with these as a child, if so I would go with all the decades in the 20th-century. Sports organization stubs

I will be looking at tiding up the sport org category, before doing so could I propose the following templates, potentially upmerged to fooian organisation stubs, fooian sport stubs and sport organization stubs. I feel that this category is currently under used and lots of sports organisations are lost in nation specific sport stub cats, sport specific cats, nation org stub cats and maybe even other places, this will help as otherwise we could be triple tagging articles. We already have a US category so these are feasible, but I will request just the following templates for the usual suspects when it comes to sport categories to see how things look before requesting categories and any further templates:

Oversized category, this subphylum has 4 classes, two of which should be easily viable for categories. I propose the following

I have used the titles of the articles, in the case of millipede(an FA) and Centipede(a GA) rather than the latin names as that seems to make sense, I have no objection to the creation of {{Diplopoda-stub}} and {{Chilopoda-stub}} as redirects. Although proposed the last two would have permcats with a total of 17 articles in them so I doubt will be needed just yet, but editors have been known to occasionally create a load of articles so I propose them just in case. This family level split is just off the oversized list, we have two tribe level subcats and one genus level subcat, I can't find any obvious splits at these levels but the permcats also have subfamily splits which do give viable stub cats for the following which I would like to propose:

A number of countries have subcats that are starting to get large, I would like to split these before they get on the oversize list. IN each case the midfielder stub category is over 600 but if I recall correctly we normally split the defender, midfielder and forward categories by dob at the same time so I propose templates and where viable categories in the following formats for any decades requiring templates and the categories iff they reach 60:

Swaziland / Eswatini

We appear to have a number of templates that are named Swaziland-blah-stub, some are redirects to the Eswatini-blah stub which is not a problem however we also have some that are either the target of a redirected Eswatini-blah stub or there is no Eswatini-blah-stub. Unless there is a more complex system that we need to follow I propose the following:

Looking around Wikipedia, the term used for people from Eswatini is still Swazi (see Category:Swazi people) so I am not proposing changing those unless there are wider changes in Wikipedia. Waacstats (talk) 09:44, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My feeling is that we shouldn't deal with these within stub sorting, but in the wider context of all templates and cats related to Swaziland / Eswatini - that is, an all-encompassing WP:CFD. I note that Category:Eswatini exists, it was moved from Category:Swaziland in November 2018 (Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 November 5); but it has Category:Swazi people as a subcat. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:00, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I note from your link to Category:Swaziland moving to Category:Eswatini almost all categories were moved and further up the page the template categories were also moved. Looking through the template category, where a number of stub templates are missing, all the templates use the country name, Eswatini in this case, except the royal family where that tree uses the demonym in general, Swazi in this case. Both of these taken together seem to be the all-encompassing discussion on whether we should use Eswatini or Swaziland. Also a read of the Talk page for Eswatini Talk:Eswatini/Archive_3#h-Requested_move_24_October_2018-2018-10-24T12:35:00.000Z shows the discussion on this and a clarification on the demonym. Category is getting close to oversize we have one (undersized) by district subcat and two upmerged templates. I can't see any districts reaching threshold for there own categories so would like to propose the following by division system with the existing templates upmerged to the relevant district (and possibly the deletion of the existing category). Another option is to go with the by district templates and just upmerge these to the division categories, as we have already done in Utter Pradesh.

Another oversized geo stub, can't find any individual counties that are over the threshold but this article Western Coal Field seems to produce a viable group if we take the 10 counties wholly in this region this should take out 150 articles, enough for a category and enough to remove it from the oversized list. A number of these categories are creeping up to close to oversize, to keep them off the list I propose splitting by decade of birth, as we do with NZ, as the rugby union fans here don't seem to have categorized by position unlike their association football brethren: therefore I propose templates and where they reach 60 categories in the following format for any decades that we need for each country listed below (sorry didn't fancy taking up even more room with probably 15 lines per country:

  • Support can't see any issues with this one. One comment on your petscan search if you change the level from 0 to 1 it gives the category and its direct subcats, change it to two and that adds the subcats of the subcats, so you dont need to list the category 4 times, once with out the | and once with |1,|2 and |3 you can just change the depth to 3.(Hope that makes sense and helps). 59 of these articles are for national federations, by the time we add the existing clubs category as a potential subcat (in the permcats it comes under handball directly and under handball organisations) we should be sizeable enough to propose the following:

Significantly oversized, we already have two sub cats basaed on which parliament they sat in , propose continuing this with a few more, the names are based on the existing sub cats categories and the permenant categories.If anyone can come up with better names for the 1953 and 1954 categories as I think these are a bit of a mess as I have propsed them:

US politician stubs

We have 3 oversized categories( Florida, Minnesota and New Hampshire). Based on other states (OH and NY) I propose splitting out those that served in the various state legislatures, ( a quick look using petscan suggests a big enough overlap in at least two of these states so that we could have a category for those that served in both houses, but I am not going down that road)

Another oversized category, I can see two ways of splitting this from the perm cat's subcats, either by decade(not widely used) or by the court that heard it it therefore propose splitting this by the court with the following templates and categories where these pass 60, Being neither an American nor an expert on this field I am open to changin this to by year/decade if people see that as a better fit:

I don't think this is necessary, TBH. The SCOTUS-stub category is not "overstuffed"; there are a lot of cases. We should only subcategorize the stub if we foresee people actually doing work based on the subcategorization. I find it difficult to believe someone would sit down and go "It is my goal to make sure the Hughes Court's cases do not have stubs." Additionally, someone interested in such a project could just use Category Intersection to achieve this. No need to write it into templates. But, hypothetically, if we were to do this, it should not be a separate template for each justice. It should be {{SCOTUS-stub|Roberts}}, {{SCOTUS-stub|Hughes}}, etc. lethargilistic (talk) 02:44, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
