Question from Wzgoldman (22:50, 17 May 2025)

[edit]

I am the subject of the short bio. I would like to correct the text to read: Wendy Z. Goldman, Paul Mellon Distinguished Professor of History, is a social and political historian of Russia. Her early work, Women, the State and Revolution: Soviet Family Policy and Social Life, 1917-1936 (Cambridge University Press, 1993) (awarded the Berkshire Conference Book Award) and Women at the Gates: Gender and Industry in Stalin’s Russia Women (Cambridge University Press, 2002) focused on family policy, women's emancipation, and industrialization. She wrote about Stalinist repression in Terror and Democracy in the Age of Stalin: The Social Dynamics of Repression (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and Inventing the Enemy: Denunciation and Terror in Stalin’s Russia (Cambridge University Press, 2011) (awarded Honorable Mention, Reginald Zelnik Book Prize in History.) She published (with Dr. Joe William Trotter Jr., co-editor) The Ghetto in Global History. 1500 to the Present (Routledge, 2018.) She focused on World War II in Hunger and War: Food Provisioning in the Soviet Union During World War II (Indiana University Press, 2015) (Donald Filtzer, co-editor). Her most recent work (with Donald Filtzer), Fortress Dark and Stern. The Soviet Home Front during World War II (Oxford University Press, 2021) (winner of the Society for Military History prize) is the first comprehensive study of the contribution of the Soviet home front to the victory in World War II. Her articles and books have been translated into Russian, Czech, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, and Japanese. She received grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, Social Science Research Council, and National Council for Eurasian and East European Research. She heads the Socialist Studies Seminar at CMU, and is the Director of the CMU Prison Education Project How can I substitute this text for the one that exists? --Wzgoldman (talk) 22:50, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Wzgoldman:
Please read my reply below carefully.
While you could just click the "edit" tab to edit the page and paste that in, by doing so you will be violating the conflict of interest guideline among others. We strongly discourage article subjects from directly editing their articles, and this is one of the reasons. Instead, the correct course of action is to suggest a change on the article's discussion page ("Talk" tab on the top left) and start a new discussion with the text you propose adding, along with citations to back up your changes.

Question from Chacapu (01:27, 18 May 2025)

[edit]

¿Cómo se puede hacer una bandera en Wikipedia? --Chacapu (talk) 01:27, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hola, estás en Wikipedia en inglés, no en Wikipedia en español. Aquí, normalmente no hablamos español.
¡Gracias! ~ Rusty meow ~ 01:58, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How can i create a company profile --Babyforest (talk) 12:06, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Babyforest: Welcome to Wikipedia!
You can create a draft article at Wikipedia:Articles for Creation. However, keep in mind creating or directly editing about a company you work for is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia.

[edit]

How do I create a page for the company I work for? --Andrewc728 (talk) 12:43, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrewc728: Creating or directly editing an article on the company you work for is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia, as it is an example of conflict-of-interest editing. If a subject were to meet our notability guidelines (inclusion criteria), an editor would have most likely written an article on it already.
You are welcome, however, to edit other articles, or to start an article about something that you do not have a conflict of interest with at Wikipedia:Articles for Creation.

[edit]

Hello, I have posted a picture in the Wikimedia Commons where the author is using a Cc-by-nc-4 to my knowledge. Is a Wikipedia post considered commercial in this instance? Am I not allowed to use this type of licensing? I credited the author. Thanks! --Duneblazer (talk) 19:03, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Duneblazer:

Question from Aqrasee (06:46, 4 June 2025)

[edit]

Hi, I am new to editing. Initially I just want to remove a hyperlink between person A and person B. They are not the same person. Firstly, how do I remove the link - probably easy; secondly do I need any kind of note to show that I have done that or that the previous link is incorrect (in case someone wants to re-establish it)? Thank you --Aqrasee (talk) 06:46, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aqrasee: When you edit the page, you're mostly likely going to be in the "Visual Editor". In that mode you can just click on the link, and then click the red icon to remove the link.
When you publish changes, it'll ask for an edit summary, where you can add an explanation for your changes, like "removed a link to incorrect person".

Question from Stephano-sabadomingo (12:04, 5 June 2025)

[edit]

Hello, appreciate you providing this mentor service. In the middle of an edit and two things arose: first, prior GNU licensing before v4 of Creative Commons, regarding how the two may relate to copyright or, in the case of the edit, conflict potentials. How secure are our edits, is it safer to leave just the IP potential for a user who is not wanting to associate with the topic? Next, the edit took more time than I originally planned for but I am not comfortable publishing yet. I saved it to a Libre text doc but wondering if there were a better and easier path inside the Wiki platform? Finally, is there a review option prior publishing? Thank you, --Stephano-sabadomingo (talk) 12:04, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Stephano-sabadomingo: To answer your questions:
  1. By publishing an edit, it is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 and the GNU Free Documentation License at the same time. The two licenses are compatible with each other in this use case.
  2. When you make an edit, other users can see what edits a specific account or IP address has made on Wikipedia (for example you can see all of my edits here). This includes page edits, as well as comments and posts. Editing as an IP does not mean that you cannot be identified, because IPs might stay the same for some time before changing, or not change at all. Also keep in mind that IPs can be traced to your real-life location.
  3. There is an experimental feature called "Edit Recovery" which you can enable in your Preferences (top right corner, click on the person icon, Preferences) -> "Editing" section, but otherwise, no, there is not a built-in way to save edits. Saving it to a text editor is the way I would go.
  4. There is a review process for creating new articles at Articles for Creation. For individual edits, there is usually no review process, but if someone disagrees with your edit, they might revert it and let you know. Do not be afraid of making a mistake; one of our principles is to be bold, and I can definitely tell you that I have learned a lot from people telling me I did something wrong!
