Irish dialect sources?
[edit]Hi there! I've just been reading your amazing work on the Irish phonology page, and have noticed you've cited many different descriptive works for the various dialects. I'm currently working on some materials from the Doegen recordings and there's a handful of dialectic descriptions I haven't yet been able to lay hands on (I have a bunch already, but can't afford to buy any more and don't have institutional library access). I was wondering if you happen to have digital copies of any monographic dialect descriptions? In particular, I'm looking for any of the following studies:
- de Burca 1958 (Tourmakeady)
- Lucas 1979 (Ros Goill)
- Mhac an Fhailigh 1968 (Erris)
- Breatnach 1947 (Ring)
- Sommerfelt 1929 (South Armagh)
- Stockman 1974 (Achill Island)
- Hamilton 1974 (Tory Island)
If you have any of these materials, I'll gladly provide my contact details (unfortunately I've forgotten my Wiki login details, so in the interim I'll try to dig out my login, or will set up a new account if I can't). Thanks very much in advance! 58.179.70.149 (talk) 09:18, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't have digital copies of any of those, only paper. You could check whether any of them has been added to archive.org, though I wouldn't hold my breath. —Mahāgaja · talk 09:23, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- All good, I just thought I'd ask. I've been able to lay hands on a number of dialect sources (I have copies of the monographs on Iorras Aithneach, Cois Fhairrge, Aran Islands, Rathlin, Dingle, Tangaveane-Commeen, Meenawannia, West Muskerry, and also a digital copy of Stockman and Wagner on the Irish of Tyrone), I'm just trying to expand to as many sources as possible so I can establish isoglosses using additional material beyond what's included in LASID. Thanks anyway! 58.179.70.149 (talk) 14:32, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

Power abuse on Wiktionary
[edit]Hello Mahagaja, and happy new year. I might have given you a heart attack with the title, but it's not about you :)
Yet again have I been blocked by the same admin (Fenakhay) who is extremely possessive on Arabic and Maltese entries. All I did was this edit - I invite you to judge whether it is vandalism.
My 2600+ voluntary edits have been awarded with being blocked for 1 year, cannot edit my talk page, cannot email anyone. I've only had negative interactions with this admin, who has a long record of unsubstantiated reverts and other tyranny - which is why I guess he needs to constantly delete his talk page which is clogged with complaints. (Use Internet archive if you wish)
The gist of my message is: Do you think I am being treated fairly? Synotia (moan) 18:39, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
BGerdemann (WMF) (talk) 19:22, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

A blast from the past
[edit]In 2006 you made an edit to Dallas County, Missouri, adding a percentage of people speaking Pennsylvania German or German at home, along with a citation, presumably documenting the percentage. link to edit
That citation is a bare link and I'm working on cleaning up bare links. In some cases it is straightforward to convert the bare link to a proper link, but that doesn't work if the link no longer goes to the correct page. I see that the link goes to a odern language Association page, but I'm assuming they've reorganized their site so your link no longer works. Could I talk you into trying to find the information? You can either add it as a properly formatted link to the article or just let me know the link and I'll take care of it. S Philbrick(Talk) 11:29, 17 October 2025 (UTC)
- Nevermind.
- I reached out to the help desk because I knew there was a tool to help me find the editor who added that information, and I illustrated my query with the edit in question. Not only did somebody respond promptly with the relevant tool, but somebody else responded with the updated site for the Modern Language Association. I use the tool to find the exact number you added and updated the citation.

UBX abortion is immoral???
[edit]Hi! Pretty confused by that there userbox over yonder. You think abortion is immoral??? Why? And why make a userbox about it on an encyclopedia? Are you aware of Wikipedia:Userboxes#Content_restrictions which says Userboxes must not be inflammatory or substantially divisive.
and names Propaganda, advocacy, or recruitment of any kind (commercial, political, religious, or otherwise)
as stuff that is not allowed. See also WP:UPNOT you may not include in your user space material ... which is likely to give widespread offense
. Very confusing. Polygnotus (talk) 20:15, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
I also discovered User:Mahagaja/life and choice which probably also should be deleted, I don't even know what it means so it seems to convey no information. I was under the impression that stuff like Category:Abortion user templates was all deleted. Why does it still exist? I am also very confused by User:Mahagaja/Carlson, but I think that one should be preserved because it is funny. Polygnotus (talk) 20:29, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
- Do whatever you must. —Mahāgaja · talk 06:39, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- I don't feel that answer the questions. Also, the things I must do are the things I least like to do, usually. So why do you think that, why make a userbox about it, and can you delete it please to comply with the stuff I cited. Thanks, Polygnotus (talk) 06:42, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- If you want to nominate them for deletion, go ahead. See WP:MFD for instructions. —Mahāgaja · talk 06:51, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- You are an administrator, and have been for 20 years. I am sure I won't have to nominate stuff in your userspace, right? If you disagree with me you can voice your opinion here instead of in a deletion nomination. Polygnotus (talk) 06:52, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- My being an administrator has nothing to do with it. If you think pages are out of scope and should be deleted, nominate them for deletion so there can be a wider discussion. —Mahāgaja · talk 06:55, 23 October 2025 (UTC)
- There is obviously a reason why you don't want to talk about it, and why you don't want to delete it. I don't understand. But I hope you have a better day. Polygnotus (talk) 07:28, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

Guide to temporary accounts
[edit]Hello, Mahagaja. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
