Feedback on Television Series Rating template
[edit]Hey Alex, hope you’re doing well.
I’ve been working on a new template called Television Series Rating, backed by a Lua module of the same name. It visualizes per-episode ratings across seasons and automatically calculates season averages. I’ve tried to design it to be skin-friendly, accessible, and not fight light/dark mode or existing page styles.
I’ve put together a demo in my sandbox so you can see how it looks in practice
Before taking it any further, I’d really appreciate your feedback.
Do you think this template (and its module) could make sense on TV show pages, or would it be better suited for lists or user space? Also curious if you see any policy or style concerns with this kind of visual presentation.
No rush at all. Just wanted your honest take before going down the wrong path. Thanks! Overandoutnerd (talk) 18:47, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hi Overandoutnerd, I hope you don't mind me jumping in here with some thoughts. This graph appears to be based on user ratings, such as those from IMDb, which we do not use on Wikipedia per WP:USERG. In fact, it seems to be very much copied from some images I have seen floating around on social media which would raise concerns for me that we are copying someone else's visual designs, I'm not sure if there is an actual policy for that but it seems like it could cause trouble for the Wiki. Terms like "perfection", "garbage", etc. are also not appropriate for Wikipedia. We are able to use verified critics ratings, such as those on Rotten Tomatoes, and Alex has made a great template that we can use to display those. It looks like the Stranger Things articles are already using them. - adamstom97 (talk) 19:02, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Overandoutnerd Hey, thanks for coming to me. I've also seen this style of per-episode ratings across social media. Unfortunately, as Adam said, it's also based on audience ratings, which we don't use per USERG and MOS:TVAUDIENCE (I do note your documentation of "The template does not verify the source of ratings; editors are responsible for ensuring ratings comply with Wikipedia’s sourcing policies.") The template also uses WP:PEACOCK descriptors, and determines these arbitrarily. For critical responses, we already have {{Television Rotten Tomatoes scores}}. Unfortunately, I'd recommend that this template not be used.
- I'm also very interested in your module coding in the Lua language, as this is your first foray into modules, and yet you've developed an entire 250-line script. -- Alex_21 TALK 21:53, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
Quick question
[edit]Hey Alex, does MOS:COLHEAD apply to Template:Episode table/part for Template:Episode table? And if not, why? I really need an answer on this because someone keeps using this as justification for removing parts on episode tables, so many thanks if you could! - (talk page stalker) @GalaxyFighter55: Yes it does. You can see the why here and further relevant discussion here. TheDoctorWho (talk) 00:09, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- @TheDoctorWho: So how does one even apply this in a now-conflicting template? Is there any definitive resolution for this or do we keep WP:STATUSQUO for now? GalaxyFighter55 (talk) 00:45, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) In a related discussion here, Alex 21 pointed out two accepted options. I used the second on the Re:Zero page as I felt it would be less controversial Olliefant (she/her) 02:05, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- I did some digging in your two links, and I'm guessing this is the consensus fix for the issue? Is this what we apply going forward? --GalaxyFighter55 (talk) 01:45, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

- @TheDoctorWho: and Alex 21, the discussion has continued here User talk:Olliefant#MOS:COLHEAD with no consensus, would either of you be willing to weigh in? I'm advocating for something similar to Doctor Who series 5 while GalaxyFighter55 is advocating for what currently exists at Re:Zero season 3 Olliefant (she/her) 03:29, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- I based this off of how it was done on List of Magnum P.I. (2018 TV series) episodes. They retained parts information while still adhering to the MOS. It's clunky, but it makes more sense if we are being honest. I don't see a reason to make the part ends or starts vague as it already cleared the technical hurdle at hand. --GalaxyFighter55 (talk) 06:24, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply. It seems the involved editors have linked you towards the issue (which I recognize exists, but damn it's annoying). Has a solution been figured out? -- Alex_21 TALK 21:54, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
- It appears so, for the most part. --GalaxyFighter55 (talk) 06:00, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
