Hunnic Wars

[edit]

The Hunnic Wars were a series of wars fought between the Indian states, predominantly the Gupta Empire and the Second Aulikara dynasty and the invading Alchon Huns during the period c. 458 to 528 CE. Two such wars took place, involving over half a century of warfare across northern and northwestern India, culminating in the eventual defeat of the Huns by the Indian coalition of Yasodharman and Narasimhagupta.

First Hunnic War

[edit]

The First Hunnic War likely commenced around 496 CE, when Toramana’s forces advanced from their base in the northwest into the plains of northern India. The Guptas, struggling with internal fragmentation and regional resistance, were unable to mount a unified defence. Over the next two decades, the Huns captured extensive territories across northern and northwest India, marking the period of their greatest territorial expansion.

Inscriptions and archaeological evidence, such as the Sanjeli copperplates of Gujarat, record Toramana’s authority in northern Gujarat and possibly as far south as Bharukaccha (Bharuch). To the east, the discovery of seals bearing Toramana’s name in Kausambi suggests that the city was captured between 497 and 500 CE, after which the Alchons advanced into Malwa. Excavations at Ghoshitarama monastery in Kausambi have revealed arrowheads, debris, and seals inscribed with Toramana Hūnarāja (“King of the Huns”), indicating occupation by Hunnic forces. A subsequent seal belonging to Mihirakula, Toramana’s son and successor, has also been found at the site.

The territories seized during this war are thought to have previously belonged to Gupta emperor Budhagupta, or possibly to his successor Narasimhagupta.

The First Hunnic War thus was won by the Alchon Huns significantly contributed to the decline of the Gupta Empire.
