On March 29, 2024, 51-year-old Michael Matthew Brady, who was on board a MAX Light Rail train approaching the NE 82nd Avenue MAX Station in Portland, Oregon was fatally stabbed by Shondel Lamar Larkin, another 51-year-old man riding the same train. Larkin was arrested and will face charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in court. This event was the second violent event on a MAX train after the 2017 incident, which was coincidentally also a stabbing.
Background
[edit]The victim, Michael Brady, was born in Indiana, but moved to Portland approximately 15 years before the incident (c. 2009). He had three children, of 28, 20, and 6 years, respectively. According to his wife, Nora Miller, Brady also had Type 1 Diabetes.[1]
The perpetrator, Shondel Larkin, is homeless.[2]
Attack
[edit]On March 29, 2024, at approximately 6 pm, 51-year-old Shondel Larkin lunged and got up near Michael Brady on an eastbound MAX train and stabbed the latter fatally with a knife after he thought he "heard voices stating that [Brady] was about to kill him", as he later told police.[2][3] Specifically, Brady was stabbed on his shoulder, chest, and abdomen.[1][4] He had boarded the train at the Pioneer Courthouse Square. Other riders on board the train reported hearing Larkin say, "You said you were going to kill me", and he later reported telling police that he thought that Brady was wearing an earbud.[2] Brady tried to defend himself by nearing the doors of the train, but Larkin continued stabbing. After Larkin stopped stabbing, Brady unconsciously leaned back towards the doors as the doors opened, due to the train having arrived at the 82nd Avenue station.[2]
Police arrived afterward, where Brady was found still on the train at the same station. Emergency responders attempted to revive Brady with no success, and Larkin was found with bloodstains on his clothes. [2][4]
Investigation
[edit]It was found that Larkin had a prior criminal record in California with multiple charges, first for burglary in 2001, and for disorderly conduct, rape, and assault to commit rape in 2006. He also was arrested in 2022 in Culver City for peeping into the windows of a home.[2][3][4] Larkin also appeared in court on April 1, 2024.[3] The investigation for the event is actively occuring.
