Comment: Same as double grazing. I strongly suggest merging this article into University of North Texas instead of resubmitting.

Comment: Primary sources do not establish notability per WP:ORG.Note also that while universities by and large are notable, individual sub-units thereof (faculties, departments, schools, colleges, etc.) by and large aren't. DoubleGrazing (talk) 14:10, 26 May 2025 (UTC)

The University of North Texas's College of Information (COI) is an academic college at the University of North Texas, which offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in the fields of data science, health informatics, information science, learning technologies, library science, and linguistics.[2] The College consists of four academic departments: The Anuradha and Vikas Sinha Department of Data Science, the Department of Information Science, the Department of Learning Technologies, and the Department of Linguistics.[3] COI is a recognized iSchool and member of the iCaucus since 2010.[4] The College and its programs have received national attention for its recent growth and development of new programs.[5]
History
[edit]The College of Information at UNT traces its origins back to 1909 with the introduction of Manual Training courses, which evolved into Industrial Education by 1925.[6] That same year, library courses began, leading to the Department of Library Service in 1939.[7] The 1960s marked rapid growth with the debut of graduate linguistics courses and the Master of Library Science degree, culminating in the formation of the School of Library and Information Sciences in 1967.[8] The 1970s and 1980s saw further transformation with the expansion of vocational and technological education, the creation of the Intensive English Language Institute in 1977, and the launch of advanced linguistics programs.
The 1990s through the early 2000s ushered in a wave of innovation, including UNT’s first online course and the nation’s first online Learning Resource Endorsement.[9] The School of Library and Information Sciences extended its reach through out-of-state programs, while linguistics and technical communication grew.[10] In 2008, key departments merged to create the College of Information, joining the iSchool consortium in 2010.[11] Subsequent years brought continued growth, including the formation of the Department of Linguistics and the launch of new degrees in data science and growth in the Ph.D. programs, solidifying UNT’s commitment to educational innovation and global engagement.[12]
College's Mission
[edit]The College of Information exists to enable our constituents to access, organize, manage, and use/apply information. The College empowers individuals and organizations to create optimal learning environments for sharing knowledge and improving performance.[13]
Academic Programs
[edit]The COI offers four undergraduate degrees in information science, data science, learning technology, and linguistics. Six master's degrees are offered in data science, information science, library science, health informatics, learning technologies, and linguistics.[14] Two Ph.D. programs are offered in learning technologies and information science. Additionally, 15 graduate academic certificates are offered.[15]
Several programs in the College have received national recognition, including the Master's in Data Science program being ranked 5th in the nation by Fortune magazine and the online Master's in Library Science program being ranked 2nd in the nation by OnlineCourseReport.com.[16][17]

- UNT Chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T)[18]
- Health Informatics Student Organization[19]

In the News
[edit]On the September 14, 2024 episode of ESPN's College Gameday, host Rece Davis mentioned that "they have a great library science program" at the University of North Texas during the weekly picks segment.[22]
In 2025, the College received national news for a $3 million gift from Anuradha and Vikas Sinha to establish a Data Science Department.[23]
The library science program has been noted for awarding over 5% of all masters of library science degrees in the United States,[24] while nearly 10% of all directors of libraries at Minority Serving Institutions are alumni of the program.[25]
