I want to do more to celebrate our past champions, the people that hold bracelets from previous tournaments. As we rush into a digital future, I want to bring our past, our history, and our DNA along for the ride.

Jeffrey: The council, which we launched in January, has been incredibly productive, and has reinforced my early perception that top players, both the pro, and non professional players that are on this council are an extraordinarily smart, opinionated, and passionate bunch. It is a challenge for me to keep up with some of them, and I appreciate that.

I'd been under the impression that Jeffrey was passing through poker on his way from NASCAR to Bud Selig's seat in Major League Baseball.

There will be online entrants for European events. We will have an online partner for the European events, but our policy as a company is to be in business only with companies that do not face the U.S. companies... [those] that do not take U.S. Bets.

When asked if he believed poker players would resemble NASCAR drivers, wearing uniforms covered with ads from all over the Internet, Pollack chuckled. His old job was the Director of Broadcasting and Digital Media for NASCAR Digital. "That is not out of the realm of possibility," Pollack said. "As long as they stick to the guidelines, players will be allowed to seek endorsement deals and advertise as they wish."

"My top priority is to grow the popularity of the World Series of Poker," said Pollack. "It is already the No. 1 brand in poker, but we're going to make it even stronger through world-class media partnerships, strategic marketing alliances and superior customer service."

Pollack was most recently managing director of broadcasting and new media for NASCAR Digital Entertainment, where he led NASCAR's use of advanced media and new technologies to increase fan accessibility and loyalty. He also helped direct NASCAR's network television partnerships with FOX, FX, NBC and TNT, and spearheaded NASCAR's season-launch marketing efforts.

he consulted with NBA commissioner David Stern on collective bargaining negotiations and relaunch strategy in 1998 and 1999. He would collaborate with Stern to help repair basketball’s image after the damaging lockout in 1998. Pollack was subsequently hired full time as the head of marketing for the NBA—a powerful position in the industry

To that end, Pollack has overseen media partnerships with companies such as ESPN, Sirius radio, GLU Mobile, Bluff Media and AOL, and deals with national sponsors like the Miller Brewing Company, Planters and Hershey’s.

He nonchalantly brushes off the WSOP’s main competition, the WPT (which happens to be largely responsible for the resurgence in poker), like he’s moving a fly off his picnic table—and without mentioning or even insinuating anything about them. Whatever the competition has, as Pollack points out, there is one thing they don’t have going for them—bracelets.

“Players measure themselves by how many bracelets they have, not by how much money they’ve won. And we’re the only place you can get that bracelet. If poker players are interested in being part of the history and heritage, we’re their only choice.” Pollack has a point; for poker players, it is all about those championship bracelets.

Another significant change is that the prize money is distributed more evenly so the lower tier of winning players earns more and the guys at the top earn less. For example, if the same number of players played this year as in 2006, the champion would not get $12.5 million as did the previous winner. A few million dollars of the top prize will get funneled to the lower tiers of winners.

El Capitan of poker has spoken. The cards will be dealt, and a new global era of poker history will march on.
