Twisted Tower Dire is a band American heavy metal, from Chantilly, Virginia.
History
[edit]The band formed in 1995, influenced by bands of the time such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Candlemass. After releasing two demo cassettes, several split EPs, and contributions to various samplers, the band was acclaimed and joined forces with Rich Walker, longtime fan and lead guitarist of Solstice. At that time, he launched a new label called The Miskatonic Foundation and offered the band the opportunity to release their debut album there.
The band released their self-produced debut studio album in 1999. Despite a modest budget, "The Curse of Twisted Tower" garnered a devoted fan base. Between 1999 and 2000, the band embarked on a non-stop, self-funded world tour in support of Curse, including several appearances at American festivals. A part of the European tour with their compatriots Slough Feg and Solstice followed, including several club dates and the Wacken Open Air, where the band performed immediately after the Venom.[1] show. In September of the same year, the band signed with the German label Remedy Records.
In 2002, the band participated in the Keep It True[2]. Their third album Crest of the Martyrs (produced by Piet Sielck and TTD) was released on May 26, 2003. The album was ranked among the 20 best power metal albums of all time by the magazine Terrorizer. This release was accompanied by a new European invasion with concerts at the Metal Bash Open Air Festival and their second appearance at Wacken[3]. The album was also the band's first to be officially released in Japan (on Spiritual Beast) and the United States (Magick/Cleopatra).
Between 2004 and 2006, the members of Twisted Tower Dire experienced difficult personal periods. The band continued to forge ahead despite setbacks, playing shows across the United States, including the first Alehorn of Power Festival (Chicago) in June 2006, and working on the aptly named fourth album, Netherworlds. [4] · [5]. In September 2006, Tony Taylor, the band's lead singer for nine years, left the band after a long struggle with depression. Due to Tony's departure[6], the band welcomed Viper frontman Johnny Aune as their new vocalist, which reinvigorated the band's spirit. Tragically, former frontman Tony Taylor died in a fatal motorcycle accident in February 2010.
Later in 2019, they released the album Wars Of The Unknown[7]. In 2022, they released the album Crest of the Martyrs Demos containing demos from their 2002 album Crest of the Martyrs[8] · [9]
