Label
[edit]I'm about to switch the |above= and |subheader= fields, so that the template (and the emitted HTML table) are correctly labelled with the name of the race, to improve accessibility. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:30, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

This should include spaces for the last race and the upcoming race, like they have for seasons in the sports league infobox. And it should include spaces for the dates of the last race and the upcoming race, like they have in the holiday infobox. I'd put the dates with the links to the articles for the last and upcoming races. Burner89751654 (talk) 17:35, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- I endorse this idea. The infobox on Kentucky Derby (e.g.) seems incomplete without fields like this. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 19:09, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
- It appears I can add these features, but I'd like to see if there are any objections and that we have a consensus before doing so. I'd also have to figure this out, technically speaking. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 19:12, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
- It looks like there are no objections, so go ahead. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:21, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- OK, thanks, I will look at this hopefully in the next week or so. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 19:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Update: I've been too busy to work on this but I will eventually get to it. Sorry for the delay. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 18:42, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

Removing automatic link in previous_race and next_race attributes
[edit]Currently if you use these two values the infobox will automatically wikilink them for you, with no option to disable it. i.e. "previous_race = 2023 Kentucky Derby" becomes 2023 Kentucky Derby. While certainly useful for the more popular horse races, this means you get dead links with anything more obscure or races that just don't need an annual entry. For example, the Lockinge Stakes; if I wanted to add when the next race is the infobox would just give a dead link. Or in the case of a page that I'm currently editing, the Japan Cup's last event would link to 2024 Japan Cup, which is a bike race.
The previous and next race's dates that I believe should be included on an event's page if possible. As far as I'm aware the link generation can't be worked around; While you can disable the link itself with <nowiki>, you're still stuck with the infobox automatically adding square brackets to the final result.
If I haven't missed anything, would there be any objections to omitting the autogenerated link? It'd let the attribute be used a lot more over the ~2700 pages this template appears on, and it's far easier to add wikilinks manually to the previous pages that'd be effected than the current problem. - I'm the one who designed those fields to have the automatic links, and I actually tend to agree with you. We probably should remove the links. For the record, their design was based on the Template:Infobox sports league, which had previously been designed with links for its similar fields, as seen at the article National Football League. These fields are fairly new to this template, and they probably haven't been implemented very widely. So changing them shouldn't be too disruptive. I've added them to a few articles myself, but I'd be happy to manually add links to those articles after this change is made.
- For that matter, it might also be a good idea to remove the automatic linking in Template:Infobox sports league, and in the previous_awards and current_awards fields at Template:Infobox award. Although it should probably be discussed on the talk pages for those templates first. Everything I said in the prior paragraph also applies to Template:Infobox award. But it doesn't apply to Template:Infobox sports league, where removing the links would probably be fairly disruptive. - Burner89751654 (talk) 14:21, 20 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response Burner89751654. In that case, I'll remove them from the template and have a quick look around myself for pages that'll be affected by this - while there's a lot of pages using this template, I suspect as you said not a huge amount are actually using that attribute currently.
- I'd agree with your other points as well; happy to raise the idea for the other two templates but I suspect it's too late for the Sports League infobox! RandomEditsForWhenIRemember (talk) 21:20, 20 September 2025 (UTC)
