[edit]

The primary uses of an em dash are:

  • To link clauses, as an alternative to a colon or semicolon (e.g. Three alkali metals are the usual substituents—sodium, potassium, and lithium.)
  • To set off a phrase or list, as an alternative to a pair of commas or parentheses (e.g. Three alkali metals—sodium, potassium, and lithium—are the usual substituents.)
