"politically independent" ?
[edit]The lead currently treats the group’s claimed political independence as an established fact. Unless high‑quality secondary sources verify this, the wording should be changed to reflect attribution (e.g., “the group claims to be composed of…”). This is especially important because the logo shown in the article is identical to the official emblem of the Palestinian Authority, which directly contradicts the implication of institutional independence and is easily verifiable by any reader. Presenting the independence claim in Wikipedia’s voice risks repeating political messaging without adequate sourcing. Per WP:NPOV, WP:V, and WP:UNDUE, the lead should reflect what reliable sources confirm, not what the organization asserts about itself. ~2026-73820-4 (talk) 05:37, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
- The phrase "politically independent" refers to the members of the committee not being presently members of political parties. I will add a wikilink to clarify this. Also your claim that the logo is "identical" to that of the Palestinian Authority is incorrect. It is similar but not identical, the text legend is different. - There are interesting (and perhaps relevant) parallels in the Wikipedia article on the "Madrid Conference of 1991" in the nature of representation being a "fig leaf" concealing who is actually calling the shots. (vs. for public consumption claiming no connections), and how to word such a circumstance.
- Here is how that Wikipedia article handled the are they or aren't they really "independent" issue:
- " . . . The Palestinian team was part of a joint Palestinian-Jordanian delegation and consisted of Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza. It was formally without overt PLO associates like Saeb Erekat and Haidar Abdel-Shafi, the head of the delegation, because of Israeli objections. Before the conference, Israel had threatened not to come if PLO representatives, or someone from outside the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, or someone from East Jerusalem would be part of the Palestinian delegation. However, the delegation was in constant communication with the PLO leadership in Tunis. Over Israeli objections, the PLO dispatched an unofficial "advisory delegation", headed by Faisal Husseini, to act as a liaison. During the conference, PLO figures were present backstage to instruct the Palestinian delegation. . . . "
- (i.e. "backstage to instruct the delegation" = controlling the delegation)
- The Wikipedia source [ref. 7 there] that it was a "sham" was the PNA itself: "This was a sham, as everyone knew, and PLO figures were in the hotels guiding the Palestinian delegation throughout the proceedings"
