Putting something in TeX into italics is nonsense and has no effect unless it is done WITHIN the TeX code. Also, superscripts and subscripts don't need {curly braces} unless there is more than one object in them. Thus x^\alpha or x^2 works, but x^{2\alpha} or x^{23} require braces.)
