Tanveer Wasim "Tan" France (né Safdar; Template:Lang-ur; born 20 April 1983) is an English fashion designer, television personality, and author.[1][2][3] He became the first openly gay, South Asian man on television, and the only out gay Muslim man on western television, as the fashion expert for the Netflix series Queer Eye, hosts the web series Dressing Funny, and co-hosts Next In Fashion.[4][5][6] He also wrote a memoir, Naturally Tan.[4]
Early life
France was born and raised in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England to Muslim Pakistani parents.[7] France commented on how he was raised in a very strict Muslim household and how his sexuality was increasingly viewed negatively in his upbringing. France's interest in fashion began at a young age, inspired by the clothing that was made in his grandparents' factory for Disney.[1][8] He attended Hall Cross School and later Doncaster College where he studied fashion[9] before moving to Manchester and then to London.[10]
Career
After graduating from college, France began working for Zara.[8] He has also worked for Selfridges among other retailers to learn more about the wholesale business side, and finally Chanel to learn more about manufacturing. "I wanted to diversify my experience, learning everything from design to delivery to wholesale." He became managing director in his early twenties.[1] France was company director at Shade Clothing before he opened his solo company.[8]
France started working in the United States in 2008 and officially moved to the US in 2015.[10] In late 2011, France founded a women's clothing line, Kingdom & State.[11] France is also a partner in the 2016-founded Rachel Parcell clothing line.[12]
France appeared in the music video for Taylor Swift's song "You Need to Calm Down".[13]
In an interview with the ITV programme This Morning, France said that he had sold his businesses after starting work for Netflix.[14]
Personal life
Tan currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his husband, Rob France.[15] He has suggested on Queer Eye that he and his husband would soon be having children by surrogate.

He also writes about "his winding journey of coming of age, finding his voice (and style!), and how he finally came out to his family at the age of 34, revealing that he was happily married to the love of his life: a Mormon cowboy from Salt Lake City."
