Submission declined on 30 July 2025 by WeirdNAnnoyed (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.

Comment: The sources provided are not enough to establish that this photographer is notable. All of the sources are simply confirming that he works for this paper or won that award; none are about him, and none provide detailed background and analysis (significant secondary coverage). Furthermore, other-language Wikipedia articles are never acceptable as sources on English Wikipedia. But the sources on that page might be. Afshin Ismaeli (born 1985)[1] is a Kurdish-Norwegian journalist, war photographer, and documentary filmmaker.[2] He is known for his coverage of conflict zones across the Middle East and for his contributions to human rights journalism. He currently works for the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Ismaeli was born in Iran and raised in Iraq.[1] He moved to Norway in 2008 and later earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oslo. His early life in the Middle East, where he witnessed the effects of war firsthand, heavily influenced his career path as a conflict reporter and visual storyteller.[3]
Career
[edit]Ismaeli began working as a journalist in Erbil, Iraq, in 2003.[1] Over the years, he has reported from various war-torn countries including Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His work focuses on the human impact of conflict, particularly among refugees, women, and minority groups.
He joined Aftenposten[2] as a journalist and photographer, where he has produced photo essays and written reports from the frontlines of some of the most dangerous regions in the world. His photographs and stories have appeared in major media outlets and international exhibitions.[3]
Notable work
[edit]In 2021, Ismaeli documented the fall of Kabul to the Taliban,[4] producing a widely circulated photo that won the “Picture of the Year” award in Norway. His reporting has also highlighted the plight of the Yazidi community in Sinjar and Kurdish fighters in Kobane.
Awards and recognition
[edit]- Ossietzky Prize (2019)[5] – Awarded by the Norwegian PEN for outstanding contributions to freedom of expression.
- The Ossietzky Prize for freedom of expression in 2019
- Recognition as “International Reporter of the Year” (honorable mention) in 2018 and 2019.[6]
