Market Street is a major east-west thoroughfare in Bloomington, Illinois. It serves both U.S. Route 150 and Illinois Route 9 for portions of its length.[2]

Route description

Market Street starts on U.S. Route 150, the Rivian Motorway, in Bloomington Heights, Illinois. Illinois Route 9 continues west, but US 150 merges onto IL 9 going east.

A mile and a half later, Market Street has an interchange with I-55/I-74/US 51. This is I-55/I-74 exit 160, since both interstates share the same exit number. A mile later, US 150 and IL 9 turn north towards Hinshaw Avenue.

After entering downtown Bloomington, Market Street intersects southbound Business US 51 southbound (Madison Street), later Business US 51 northbound (East Street). This is also where Market Street meets Historic US 66. After intersecting US 150 again, now Clinton Street, the road ends on Robinson Street.

The total distance is 4.2 miles (6.8 km).[1]

History and future

SBI Route 122 ran from Havana to Bloomington on what was Market Street and Illinois Route 9. By 1937, IL 122 had been truncated to IL 9 west of Bloomington.

A construction project on Market Street began in May 2024, patching and resurfacing the road from the Sugar Creek bridge to Hinshaw Avenue. Nearby Hinshaw Avenue and Locust Street got resurfaced as well.[3] This project also aims to add new sidewalks, curb ramps, curbs, gutters, and traffic lights.[3]

In April 2025, the intersection with White Oak Road (CR 70) was reopened after a reconfiguration that was part of the aforementioned construction project.[4] However, this intersection is permanently limited to southbound and westbound right turns. Left turns from eastbound Market Street or southbound White Oak Road are not permitted.

Communities and sites

Market Street serves Bloomington, Illinois. It provides crucial access to I-55/I-74/US 51 from downtown Bloomington, as it is the only street in the area that has an interchange with those highways.

Between the Rivian Motorway and I-55/I-74/US 51, Market Street passes a major industrial plaza accessible via Wylie Drive and other local roads. This industrial complex also includes the Marcus Bloomington Cinema and Interstate Center fairgrounds.[5]

There are also many transit stops along the route, including on Hinshaw Avenue (US 150/IL 9 North), Center Street, and Clinton Street (US 150).

Major intersections

The entire route is in McLean County.
