Porte d'Auteuil (French pronunciation: [pɔʁt dotœj]; lit. 'Gate of Auteuil') is a station on Line 10 of the Paris Métro. It is situated in the 16th arrondissement, on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. Like the following two stations Michel-Ange–Auteuil and Église d'Auteuil, it holds the distinction of offering westbound services only.
History
[edit]The station opened on 30 September 1913 as part of the extension of Line 8 from Beaugrenelle (now Charles Michels). On 29 July 1937, Line 10 was extended from Duroc to La Motte-Picquet–Grenelle and the section of Line 8 between La Motte-Picquet–Grenelle and Porte d'Auteuil was transferred to Line 10. Prior to 3 October 1980, when the line was extended to Boulogne–Jean Jaurès, trains ran on to Michel-Ange–Molitor to return to the east.
The station is named after the Porte d'Auteuil, a gate in the 19th-century Thiers wall of Paris, which was located in the district of Auteuil, which was mostly incorporated in the 16th arrondissement in 1860, with the remainder absorbed into the commune of Boulogne-Billancourt.
Boucle d'Auteuil
[edit]Before the extension to Boulogne, all the trains ended at Porte d'Auteuil. Following the extension to Boulogne in the 1980s, Porte d'Auteuil become a way station and all the trains are now running to Boulogne–Pont de Saint-Cloud. However, a few trains still continue running the Boucle d'Auteuil (Auteuil Loop) into Gare d'Austerlitz. This phenomenon only happens during the first service, rush hours or if an incident or maintenance happens towards Boulogne.
In some rare cases, some trains can be added towards Gare d'Austerlitz during sport events at the Parc des Princes, Stade Jean-Bouin or during Roland-Garros. A ghost station, Porte Molitor, was originally intended for the Parc des Princes, and possibly for Stade Jean-Bouin and Roland-Garros later, but the project was abandoned for security reasons; the ghost station, which has no entrance or exit, now serves for trains storage.
