What is useful about Mindat? I haven't been able to find any documentation about their taxon pages. It looks like all their data is pulled from GBIF/PaleoDB/EOL/Wikipedia. The Wikidata property for Mindat taxa isn't very well populated either (less than 100 items have it). Plantdrew (talk) 22:59, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

iNat does get its taxonomy from other sources, and its about pages come from Wikipedia, but the photos of organisms are native iNat content. I'm not saying there isn't anything useful about Mindat, but if there is, I don't know what that is. Plantdrew (talk) 23:25, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It is strange that Mindat has no obvious description of its taxon pages or way of navigating to them without using search. The taxon pages seem an afterthought to the main purpose of the site. It pages on minerals and rocks would certainly be useful if there was a mineral equivalent of Taxonbar. While it gathers information from other sites, it does also have photos, some of which are in the public domain and might be useful. I don't feel strong either way, but have no objection to adding it. I'll wait for other opinions. — Jts1882 | talk 07:12, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've always thought of Mindat as a mining and minerals site. I don't see biological taxa mentioned as a principal category on their front page and there's no indication that they have the expertise or resources to curate biological taxa.
