Template-protected edit request on 6 February 2025

[edit]

Hi! Would it be possible to replace the raster Kentucky Turnpike shields with this new vector version? Thank you! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 03:07, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@OrdinaryScarlett:  Done. In the future, such an edit is made at Module:Road data/strings/USA/KY, which isn't under protection, not the main template itself. Imzadi 1979  05:22, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! And I see, thanks for letting me know! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 06:15, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland local roads and shields

[edit]

When the template is used for a local ("L", e.g. L1003) road, is it possible to make it so that if a shield exists on Commons, that it also appears with the number, and if not, that none is displayed? EthanL13 | talk 23:11, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Ireland roads

[edit]

Currently, when inputting roads for Northern Ireland (NIR, e.g. A1), it links to roads in Great Britain. This is because Module:Road data/strings/NIR refers back to Module:Road data/strings/GBR, despite Northern Ireland using a separate system. Can this be changed? Revisiting the Shield Size

[edit]

Hello, I noticed the default shield size was changed from 20px to 24px. I'm thinking it might be a little too big, especially for some the rectangular Canadian shields. What would your thoughts being about meeting in the middle and bumping it down to 22px? For example:

Hwy 1 (TCH) [20px] - Former

Hwy 1 (TCH) [22px] - Proposed

Hwy 1 (TCH) [24px] - Current

Highway 1 (TCH) - Live

Hwy 17 (TCH) [20px] - Former

Hwy 17 (TCH) [22px] - Proposed

Hwy 17 (TCH) [24px] - Current

Highway 17 / TCH - Live

Hwy 2 [20px] - Former

Hwy 2 [22px] - Proposed

Hwy 2 [24px] - Current

Highway 2 - Live

I-5 [20px] - Former

I-5 [22px] - Proposed

I-5 [24px] - Current

I-5 - Live

US 2 [20px] - Former

US 2 [22px] - Proposed

US 2 [24px] - Current

US 2 - Live

Based on the different examples, the numbers are still visible but the shields are slightly more muted. At the very least maybe it just needs to be applied to the Canadian and American shields. Thoughts? MuzikMachine (talk) 22:05, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Part of the reason this was changed three years ago was to make some of the graphics more legible, especially in other countries where the numbers on the graphics occupy a smaller area (like the South African or Japanese examples below), or in the case of the banner plates. It also fixed some of the centering issues with banner plates appearing above wide markers that use the standard 25:20 size ratio. That ratio at 24px of height makes 30px of width, which allows the 24px banner to be properly centered because MW doesn't do half pixels in size. Switching to 22px would make the wide markers 27.5px in width, and that would make things even messier.

TL;DR: the current size fixes a lot of issues, and going backwards to 20px or trying to split the difference at 22px will create more issues. Imzadi 1979  01:59, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Jct/testcases has examples of the output from before the 2022 updates in the Legacy column. Some of the markers for the US are almost illegible at the older size and can be read now at the newer size, such as the Louisiana markers, the Florida markers, and many of the auxiliary banner plates. The directional or TO banner plates would have the same issues as the auxiliaries if reduced in size. Imzadi 1979  02:06, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Imzadi1979 Good to know, thanks. Do you think the shield sizes on {{Routelist row}} should be updated to to match {{Jct}}? MuzikMachine (talk) 20:05, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That would be a good idea for consistency. Imzadi 1979  20:25, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
