Afghanistan  competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics  in Melbourne , after having missed the 1952 Games  in Helsinki .
They only sent a team of 12 players to compete in the field hockey . Six of these players had also competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics .[ 1]

Afghanistan did not participate in 1976 due to a boycott , in 1984 due to a boycott  and was barred from the 2000 Summer Olympics to its discrimination against women under the rule of the Taliban .
