Keith Hart

John Keith Hart (* 1943 in Old Trafford/Manchester; † 6. November 2025 in Paris) war ein britischer Ethnologe und Hochschullehrer.

Leben und Wirken

Keith Hart studierte zunächst Klassische Philologie an der University of Cambridge und erwarb dort 1964 den Bachelorgrad. Anschließend wechselte er auf das Gebiet der Ethnologie. Nach ethnologischen Feldforschungen in Ghana (1965 bis 1968) promovierte er 1969 zum Ph.D. an der University of Cambridge. Weitere Feldforschungen betrieb er 1970 auf den Cayman Islands und 1998/99 in Südafrika. Als Hochschullehrer war er dann an mehreren Universitäten u. a. in Großbritannien und den USA tätig, sowohl vor als auch nach seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der University of Cambridge, wo er von 1984 bis 1998 als Professor tätig war. Von 2004 bis 2008 war er Professor am Goldsmiths (University of London) und von 2013 bis 2016 an der London School of Economics. Keith Hart beschäftigte sich vor allem mit der Wirtschaftsethnologie und dem Geld. Er prägte den Begriff „informelle Wirtschaft“.
