Frontline Pilipinas (lit. 'Frontline Philippines') is a Philippine television news broadcasting show broadcast by TV5, with simulcast on RPTV since 2024. Originally anchored by Raffy Tulfo and Cheryl Cosim, it premiered on October 5, 2020, replacing Aksyon. Cosim and Julius Babao currently serve as the anchors.[1][2]
History
[edit]2020–2021: Tulfo-Cosim era
[edit]Frontline Pilipinas premiered on October 5, 2020, at 6:30 PM PHT with Raffy Tulfo and Cheryl Cosim as original anchors, along with News5 chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes, chief correspondent Ed Lingao, and Lourd de Veyra as segment anchors for Deretsahan, NEWS ExplainED, and Word of the Lourd, respectively.[3][4] The program serves as the replacement to TV5's longest-running flagship newscast Aksyon, which ended abruptly on March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the enforcement of enhanced community quarantine in Luzon,[5] as well as the two One-branded newscasts which aired on TV5.[6] The following week, the program moved to 6:00 PM timeslot to give way for the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup and new primetime programming.[7][8]
On February 15, 2021, athlete and TV host Gretchen Ho joined the newscast as "Sports" segment anchor (alongside The Big Story on One News).[9] On February 22, 2021, the program extended its running time to one hour and 15 minutes as part of TV5's programming changes.[10]
Tulfo's departure
[edit]On October 1, 2021, Raffy Tulfo bid farewell to the newscast to run for senator in 2022.[11][12]
Julius Babao was named as Raffy Tulfo's replacement, joining the newscast on February 7, 2022.[13] In conjunction with this, Frontline Pilipinas also debuted its new opening billboard, title card, and graphics. Babao was originally to make his debut on January 17, but was postponed due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases brought by the omicron variant.[14] Ed Lingao took over as interim anchor of the newscast.[15]
Also on the same day, Gretchen Ho took over the anchoring duties for Frontline sa Umaga from Paolo Bediones as he left News5 on February 1 due to the issues surrounding his company, Ei2Tech. The newscast returned to the original 6:30 PM timeslot and was extended to 90 minutes on May 22, 2023.[16]
On January 8, 2024, Jiggy Manicad joined the newscast, becoming its first third main anchor. It also marked his return to journalism, after a nearly six-year hiatus.[17]
From March 8, 2025, beginning with its weekend edition, all of the newscast's edition (with exception of News5 Alerts until June 8, 2025) silently dropped its original theme music and began adopting the composition used by its predecessor program Aksyon from 2010 to 2017 throughout its broadcasts for unknown reasons, sharing the music with TV5's affiliate in Zamboanga City for its regional newscast Dateline Zamboanga.[18] A week later, the newscast transitioned to a temporary studio set, as its current news studio underwent renovations in preparation for the Bilang Pilipino 2025 mid-term election coverage.[19] On April 29, the graphics were updated, starting with its edition of Frontline Express.[20][21] On May 16, Manicad made his final appearance on the newscast to become the anchor of its lead-in, Una sa Lahat. On May 19, it was shortened to 45 minutes to make way for Una sa Lahat and Wattpad Presents: Ang Mutya ng Section E.
Newscast editions
[edit]Frontline sa Umaga (Morning edition)
[edit]Frontline sa Umaga (lit. transl. Frontline in the Morning), a morning edition of Frontline Pilipinas, aired on TV5 from May 10, 2021 to June 16, 2023, with Paolo Bediones and Marga Vargas as its original anchors.[22][23] The newscasts aired at 6 am on May 10, 2021, later moving to the 10:50 am slot on October 4, 2021, the 10:15 am slot on April 18, 2022, and the 10:00 am slot on July 18, 2022. It aired as a segment of Gud Morning Kapatid from June 19, 2023 to May 3, 2024. The newscast returned from May 6 to October 18, 2024, and was replaced by Cine Cinco sa Umaga.[24]

The newscasts added as a second wave at 4:50 pm/3:50 pm slot from December 16, 2024 to January 31, 2025 replacing the rerun of Stay-In Love and was replaced by the rerun of The Second Chance, the second wave is returned from April 28 to June 27, 2025 at 5:05 pm/4:35 pm slot replacing Wil To Win. On May 17, 2025, it was extended until Saturday and broadcast in two 15-minute intervals each before and after Rosalinda, which then shortened to two 10-minute intervals (from 2:25 pm to 2:35 pm and from 3:50 pm to 4:00 pm) from May 24 to June 21, 2025. On June 28, the Saturday edition's intervals were merged as one and were moved to the 3:20 PM timeslot, after Rosalinda and before Cine Cinco: Hit na Hit.[25] On June 30, the two "waves" of Frontline Express are extended to 30 minutes each, one from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM[26] and another one from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM.[27]
