Wing Commander Vyomika Singh[2]is an officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF), serving as a helicopter pilot in the Flying Branch. She co-led the media briefing for Operation Sindoor in 2025, a military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, following the Pahalgam terror attack.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

Early life and education

Vyomika Singh was born in India, with her exact date and place of birth not publicly disclosed.[9] Her name, meaning “one who resides in the sky” or “daughter of the sky,” aligns with her career as a pilot.[10] She participated in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during her school and college years.[11]

Singh holds an engineering degree.[12][13][14]

Military career

Commissioning and early service

Singh was commissioned into the Indian Air Force’s Flying Branch on 18 December 2004, as a helicopter pilot. She has accumulated over 2,500 flying hours, operating Chetak and Cheetah helicopters in terrains such as Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India. Her early assignments included reconnaissance, troop transport, and rescue missions. In November 2020, she led a rescue mission in Arunachal Pradesh, providing air support in remote areas.[15]

On 18 December 2019, Singh received a permanent commission in the Flying Branch, allowing her to continue serving in a long-term capacity.[16]


In 2021, Singh participated in a tri-services all-women mountaineering expedition to Mount Manirang (21,625 feet) in Himachal Pradesh.[17] It was part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations marking 75 years of India’s independence.[18][19] The expedition was acknowledged by the Chief of Air Staff.[20]

Operation Sindoor

On 7 May 2025, Singh co-led a media briefing in New Delhi with Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, detailing Operation Sindoor.[21][22] The operation, conducted between 1:05 AM and 1:30 AM, targeted nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and PoK in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April 2025, which killed 26 people. Singh stated that the strikes used “niche technology weapons” to avoid civilian casualties and confirmed the destruction of all nine camps. She emphasized that no Pakistani military installations were targeted.[23][24]
