Pyare Lal Sharma (30 June 1925 – 27 November 1978) was an Indian freedom fighter and three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Ghaziabad Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He played a significant role in the regional politics of Ghaziabad and western Uttar Pradesh during the 1960s and 1970s, and is remembered for his strong public connect and fearless leadership.

Early life and background

[edit]

Pyare Lal Sharma was born on 30 June 1925 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, into a politically influential family. His father, Indraj Sharma, popularly known as Shahaji, was regarded as the king of 52 villages in the Ghaziabad region, and held a respected social and political standing.

Freedom struggle

[edit]

Sharma was actively involved in the Indian independence movement in his youth. He organized underground revolutionary activities and participated in civil disobedience protests, leading to his arrest on several occasions. His work was centered on local resistance movements in western Uttar Pradesh.

Political career

[edit]

After independence, Sharma entered active politics and was elected as the MLA from the Ghaziabad Assembly constituency in 1967, 1969, and 1974. Throughout his tenure in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, he focused on rural development, public health, sanitation, and educational reforms. Known for his bold speeches and incorruptible nature, Sharma maintained influence across party lines despite being an independent political figure.

Assassination and legacy

[edit]

On 27 November 1978, Sharma was assassinated in Ghaziabad. The incident was widely perceived as politically motivated due to rising rivalries and his increasing mass following. His death triggered widespread mourning and tributes across the region.

Sharma is remembered as one of the most influential leaders in the history of Ghaziabad’s politics. Annual homage and commemorations are held in his memory by political and civil society organizations.

Family and political legacy

[edit]

Sharma’s son, Surendra Kumar Sharma, also known as Munni, carried forward his political legacy and served as MLA from Ghaziabad in 1980, 1989, and 2004. The Sharma family remains socially and politically active in the region.
