Metro9' is a 2024 experimental post-neo expressionist film directed by 9 Patrick di Santo and produced by the interdisciplinary media collective number9ine. The film is a modern interpretation and restoration of themes from Thea von Harbou’s Metropolis, blending experimental opera, ambient electronica, and symbolic visual storytelling. It is often stylized as Neun Metro in festival circuits and promotional materials.

Background

[edit]

The film was developed over five years as a multi-platform collaboration involving academic researchers, experimental musicians, and historical avant-garde visual artists. It forms part of the larger Original Intelligence framework spearheaded by di Santo, emphasizing emotional frequency, sentient-coded narrative structures, and psycho-spatial immersion.

Production and Style

[edit]
  • Metro9* features a mixture of digital overlays, stylized operatic sequences, and voice-guided introspection. The soundtrack was composed by music director Arthur Burrows and Case Trick with additional contributions from artists associated with number9ine, including Di Ex Machinis, O’le, Molly Marx and CR Reid. The project merges electronic soundscapes with classical instrumentation and field audio, contributing to its distinctive mood.

Philosophy and Reception

[edit]

Critics have compared the film’s approach to a fusion of the meditative visual pacing of Baraka with the digital ritual aesthetics of cybernetic cinema. It has been referenced in online art journals and was cited in a review by Buzzslayers as "a hauntingly immersive invocation of techno-shamanic futures."[3]
