Born 1958 in Vienna, he studied Technical Physics at the Vienna University of Technology, and subsequently he graduated 1994 at the TU with the PhD thesis “Radionuclide behaviour in water, suspended matter and sediment of the Danube”.
After his university studies he became Scientific Leader of the Working Group ‘Radiometry’, BVFA Arsenal, Vienna, Senior Scientist of Arsenal Research, Division of Environment, specific field of environmental radioactivity, Head of Section Geo-, Hydro- and Biocycles of the Arsenal Research, chair of WG’s Radon and Low-Level Radiometry at the Austrian Standardisation Institute, and Principal Scientist of the Austrian Research Centers Seibersdorf, Department of Environmental Research.
Since 1996 he has been Board Member (Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President, and President) of the Austrian Association of Radiation Protection (ÖVS) – Member of the International Radiation Protection Association IRPA. In 2012 he became Honorary Member of the Austrian Radiation Protection Association.
In 2003 he became Professor for Applied Physics - 'Radioecology, Radiometry, Radiation Physics and Radiation Protection’ at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) and at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien).
From 2004 to 2020 (retirement) he was Head of Section ‘Ionising Radiation and Radioactivity’ in the Federal Office of Metrology and Survey (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen), Vienna, and additionally he was Head of the BOKU Low-Level Counting Laboratory Arsenal (2004 - 2016).
From 2005 to 2020 he was the Austrian Delegate at the Consultative Committee for Ionising Radiation at BIPM – Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, Paris.
From 2009 to 2020 he acted in the Executive Board of the International Committee for Radionuclide Metrology – ICRM (Secretary, Vice-President, and Scientific Secretary)
He had coordinated national and European joint research projects in radiation physics, radionuclide metrology, radiation measurements, radioecology and radiation protection and he has published about 300 scientific papers in international journals and he has (co-)edited several books in his scientific fields.
He is active in science, research and university teaching in the fields of radiation physics, radiation protection, radiology and metrology.
