Brooker Highway

The Brooker Highway is a highway in Tasmania, Australia. The highway is the major arterial route through Hobart's northern suburbs and Hobart's major road connection to the cities and towns of Northern Tasmania. It is a part of the National Highway Network and is Tasmania's busiest highway.
History
The original Hobart Northern Outlet was constructed in 1961 as a 2 lane road to Elwick Road. By 1968 the Outlet reached Berriedale. In 1977 The highway was further extened, taking the highway to Claremont Link Road. By 1983 The highway that stands today was complete. The Brooker Highway was built as a replacement to the original Midland Highway route between Hobart city and Granton, which passed along Elizabeth Street, New Town Road and Main Road, through the built up areas of New Town, Glenorchy and Berriedale. The Hobart Northern Outlet was renamed Brooker Highway, after a former Premier of Tasmania, Edward Brooker.
Route
At the northern end (at Granton) it connects to the 
Midland Highway (which heads north towards Launceston) and the 
Lyell Highway (which takes motorists towards the west coast).
The Brooker Highway runs approximately 17 km south past the northern suburbs of Hobart. It is four lane (two each way) for almost its entire length. Trees line the middle of several kilometres, and fencing prevents pedestrian access at various points. The Highway makes its way past the Derwent Entertainment Centre, Elwick Racecourse, Rugby Park, Cornelian Bay Hockey Grounds, The Domain, and The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
It has large intersections that hold multiple lanes to allow traffic on and off at Risdon Road, Elwick Road and Derwent Park Road. The highway is in a reasonable condition for its age, and experiences congestion for only a few hours a day. Recently the government came under pressure from the community to improve pedestrian access over the highway at Goodwood and eliminate the stairs primarily for the benefit of the elderly and handicapped.
The Highway ends just east of Burnett Street, North Hobart, Where the road becomes Brooker Avenue. This southern part of the highway is under the control of the Hobart City Council. At the southern end, the road connects to two other highways - the 
Tasman Highway (leads towards the east coast and eventually back to Launceston), and to the Hobart CBD streets of Davey and Macquarie Street. These streets are a part of the 
Huon Highway, which heads south towards Kingston and Huonville.
Speed Limits
The section of highway between Granton and Rosetta that forms an expressway and therefor the speed limit is 100 km/h. Once the Highway comes to Rosetta High School the speed limit slows to 80 km/h, it ramins constant at this speed limit until the highway reaches Hobart and becomes Brooker Avenue, here the speed limit slows to 60 km/h.
